Hi guys,

I'm working on my first. It is a 48-200. Simple, right? Got it with a loud hum and did a recap. Hum is gone but no sound. I have 2 schematics from different companies and they each list tubes but one shows a 35Y4 and the other shows a 35Z5GT. Also one shows a 50L6GT, the other shows a 50A5. (mine has the 2nd ones). The sticker on the bottom of the case shows the ones that are in the radio. Anyone ever run into this?

Thanks.

I am going to combine 2 newbie questions into 1 post

I just got back a 42-PT95 from a recapp job. I still have 2 issues with the radio

1) When turning the radio on, and moving the volume control I get loud static. Additionally, lowest volume setting of the radio is moderately loud, then if I can get past the static, further up on the volume control it is softer, and then gets louder again.

Q: Is this just dirt ? How can I clean the volume control (Contact Cleaner). Link to proceedures if possible. Why is it loud, the softer, then loud again ?

2) The pointer to the tuner works, but is not pointing to the proper frequency. How can I correct this ?

Thanks again for the valuable information.

-Jim

I have just finished adjusting my 80jr, and some time before I finished the 20, console version.
Both do not sound comparable to my Zenith 9s262.
I can hear distortion.

Both sound very similar (distortion-wise).

All the radios have been fully recapped (and I mean - fully), and re-resistorized.
All the tubes have been verified and are good-to-excellent.

80jr has A-class output whereas 20 has push-pull type.
20 has the speaker re-coned whereas 80jr has the original speaker which looks like new and does not have any damage (visible) whatsoever.

80jr has the original output xfmr.
20 has the replacement one (I think 125 C or D, a universal push-pull).

So, considering the quality is somewhat acceptable, but not stellar by any measure, is this something that maybe I should be expecting or is there room for improvement?

I can definitely put a sound signal in and watch the scope picture and see if it is distorted too much, but I have to get me a compact sound generator first.
But I'd like to understand if this is warranted or maybe I am trying to chase something that's mot there.

Mostly I need to figure out what CRT this set uses. It appears to be a 12 inch CRT, but there is no number listed on the tube diagram that I can see and it appears the number on the tube has been rubbed off or is totally concealed under the ion trap. What type CRT is this? Need the correct number to test it. One other note, I noticed two pins aren't used by the TV socket and it appears to be the original Philco tube.

I just recently joined this forum as I have a bunch of Philcos. I recently found a Philco console that I haven't been able to find any pictures of online or in my Philco book. Did Philco produce more than one style of the model 20 console? All the photos I have seen show the model 20 with legs. The model I have has no legs and has a totally different grille. The chassis is marked Philco model 20 but there are no markings on the wood cabinet. It looks to be factory made. I bought it mostly for the chassis as the veneer is not great but before I junk the cabinet I wanted to get some information. Thanks in advance for any replies or opinions.

I am attempting to restore/refurbush several Philco radios for what I hope to be Christmas gifts. I am having the electronics professionally restored by others [while I still learn the proper techniques of recapping etc myself], but I am going to attempt the restoration of the cosmetic end of the radios.

I have several 42-PT95's which are being restored and most suffer from the same problem, that is warping of the plastic grills. See the attached pictures which represent two different radios.

A) Does anyone manufacture reproduction grills for these radios, as this seems to be a common problem.

B) Assuming I can straighten the grills, is there a technique for cleaning the plastic to bring back some of the shine ?

I also own a 42-PT94 which I purchased 4 or 5 years ago, which again I had electronically restored by a professional radio service. This is my own personal radio which I use every day at work. This radio must have suffered from the same fate as the PT95's that I currently have. Some unknown person it looks like created a wood frame to replace the plastic grill. I have seen this technique done on other PT94's and 95's.

C) Does any one know of a source for this type of grill "replacement".

Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this topic.

I need an on/off volume switch for my model 18X. The parts list I got from Nostalgia Air shows it as Philco part number 33-5024. Can anyone tell me anything about this switch? I have a 500K audio taper with switch that I bought for another radio project. Will that work? The schematic look like it shows a value of 75,000 ohms. Is there some resource out there that will convert old Philco part numbers to current items? Thanks for any help.

Found this on CL the other day. Called and set up an appointment for today. It was about 2 hrs away, but I am very happy! An Airline MOVIE DIAL 13 tubes with motorized tuning and a 12" speaker. This was another of my "holy grail" sets.

I scratched the case getting it out of the car........but it will work out ok. It has two broken buttons. I have one of them and the other may be inside the chassis somewhere as this is where the previous owner found one.

The radio was bought brand new by the owner's grandfather and has been moved only once since it was purchased. The purchase price was $150 and I think I got a really good deal!
I am a VERY HAPPY CAMPER!!!
