Holy cow. I've just discovered a whole batch of these electrolytics in a newer Maggy (solid state) that are ALL bad!. Strangely, the thing still kind of worked. So far I've replaced about 18 of various values. If you ever run across a nice early transistor Maggy that has NO output, the first thing to look for is the output caps. Usually a 200-400 mfd value which are directly in series with the output. They're usually shot and replacing these will at least get an output. The last one I got also had a bad main filter cap which was also kind of strange. It had Common Positive. Guess back in those days for a time the common was actually positive vs. negative.

Maybe I'm so new to this stuff that this is old, stale, news, but once you get these newer old Maggies going they sound pretty good and have super bass with the 15" woofers.

Can anyone let me know the correct dial cord for a 40-180? I see Radio Daze sells some different sizes and I can't find anything in the radio's documentation.

Thanks.

This set came out of a damp basement after a CL p/u of another radio. The speaker cone had multiple tears that got the coffee filter repairs and it sounds great. The finish was in must-strip condition. According to the Philco photo gallery, this model was not offered for very long. Here's the before:

And here's the after:

And for comparison, my shortest Philco console meets my tallest:

Didn't see a voltage listed for power caps, Philco 37-62.
I'm guessing 400 volts.
Thanks. Icon_clap

This may be a perennial -- I'll risk it. Question applies to most old Philcos, I think, since the adjustment procedures all seem similar.

Following the given alignment instructions (compensating condenser tuning) I connect my signal generator to the grid of the detector (type 6A7 in this Model 60) and my VOM to the primary of the output transformer. The generator is set to 460 kHz. If I add audio to the signal I can easily hear the signal on the speaker. The meter reads about 20 volts, either AC or DC. My problem is, when I vary the attenuation on my signal generator, the meter reading doesn't change. I have a noisy attenuation pot and the meter jumps when the pot is adjusted, but otherwise there's no response.
Should I be using a different meter? Are we measuring AC or DC? No point in messing around with the compensators if the meter is not responding. Or am I just not understanding what's needed?
Thanks!!!!
David

Am in the final redoo of a 38-7, (still need a range 1 ant. coil).Have listed in wanteds. Question here is How do you change the cone presets?
I assume they loosten by unscrewing somehow and then tightning? I have tried using a screwdriver on the large slot in the tuning knob while pressing in on it while engaged on a cone but nothing catches to do anything. Is that how you supposed to do it?
Also the muting wire was removed so I re-connected it and got a lot of noisey static when tuning. Was that a weak spot and previous repairman removed it?
This set also had a tuning capacitor problem I've never encountered.
The osc. section on the lower 1/3d of the travel the rotor plates shorted out on the mounting of the stator. about half of the rotor plates touched and I ended up reducing the rotor slightly with a dremmel sander. I'ts ok now, just never had that problem before.

Anyway need advice on the cone adjustments. Also how to remove the fine tuning knob to replace whatever was there for friction.
Don

[/b][/u]I'm another newbie, with a dilemma. I guess I know just enough to be dangerous. The problem is; no Fm reception. I'm working on a Philco 53-956. I've replaced all the paper capacitors that I can see. I've also replaced the multi-section can capacitor. The AM sounds good and strong, but when I switch to Fm...nothing. I gently cleaned the wafer switch connections and even attached an external antenna to the two screw connections on the back. But still no joy. Can someone provide a few basic trouble shooting steps to resolve this problem? I just started learning, so any suggestions would be appretiaited.

I've been through the postings on spray lacquer toner and am beginning to get a grasp as to what needs to be done. In the interest of placing only a single order for toner, could someone give me a hint as to how many cans are needed for my 37-660 console. I've stripped it down to bare wood, turned new feet (the old ones were rotted to the point where they were hardly more than powder) and am nearly finished with repairing the cracked curved veneer so I am close to being ready to go. Also, the inside of the console is peeling, faded and otherwise damaged. Should this be stripped and repainted or just left alone (the quality of the wood itself is OK)? The damage was so severe on the outside of the cabinet that I was left with no choice other than stripping it down to bare wood.

Well, yes, I had enough room for one more. I have its brother, a 112, so I found a 111. As soon as I can get it out of the car back seat I will post some pictures and on with the restoration. Probably more questions about the cabinet, which is pretty good. The chassis is close to the 112 so I will know my way around. Off to Chuck to get some nice documentation.

Are there Philco Model 80 radios that were the Jr model with beautiful real wood instead of the two tone finish.

Please see the pictures. I have recently got on board collecting Philco radios. I am an Atwater Kent Collector and I am expanding to other brands.
