If the cap mentioned, on the vol cont is on the wrong leg it might act like a tone control.

Well that aforementioned cap is a mica cap, I didn't touch the mica cap or any of the connections associated with it.

By the way, what's with the center tapped Volume control with a mica cap attached to the centertap and one leg of the volume control? I'm asking because my Philco 116B uses the same exact volume control configuration as this Zenith except that the tone control setup is a knob setup rather than a keypad arrangement like the Zenith is.
