Philco grandfather clock mech - OldRestorer - 02-05-2015

I just bought a grandfather clock mech for my clock and I cant seem to find a picture of it.

The one I have right now is electronic crap and I want to put in the one I just got but none of the ones online seem to have the same mech.

My mech has a second hand with a crescent moon and the 2 regular hands but on the back of the mech there are 2 holes for starter and handset with nothing in them.

Is this not a philco mech that I bought?

RE: Philco grandfather clock mech - TimC - 02-05-2015

Looks like recycled with new guts/hands installed.

Tried to attach pics of mine but can't get file size that small...

Yeah, it looks hacked.  My Philco GFC has the starter knob that needs to be spun.

Thanks Bob, I'm using a Samsung Galaxy (Droid)
Takes great pictures but ...

RE: Philco grandfather clock mech - OldRestorer - 02-07-2015

Anyone got a pic of the correct mech?

It figures that I spend an hour dismantling the clock and rebuilding/rewiring it and actually get it to work properly to find out it is not original. Icon_rolleyes

Should I return it?

He said he would take it back and I'm not sure I would want to keep an incorrect part for $74.00. Then again it is better than the battery clock that is in there now...

UGH, What to do!

Yeah, I would return it if you are trying to get the "right one." If you know or can learn what specific brand/type movement was in there when it was made, I'm sure you can find an original. There's gotta be a forum out there for people that tinker with clocks like we do radios.

Here's what it should look like on the outside anyway. FWIW

He thinks you guys are stoopit, Icon_lol

What would you know? you are philco "RADIO" collectors?

He wrote me this kinda nasty email saying he thinks I am trying to return a different item, I am lying, Needless to say he refuses to take it back. I could file with ebay but may have an issue because I opened it up and changed the cracked cord before knowing it was not the original mech.

Then he goes to say;

Quote I would certainly call in to question anyone who would state that it is not original. Philco made radios, and it's not unreasonable that they subcontracted the clock manufacturing to someone else. Either way, I'm not convinced the clock is not original. Quote

I am really getting tired of eBay.... Sheesh,

I hate bombing peoples feedback but why be so accusative and rude?

RE: Philco grandfather clock mech - Arran - 02-08-2015

I think I would return it, it's pretty obvious that someone took the case off the original mechanism and fitted a different electric clock inside. There are two holes in the back that should have shafts coming out that don't, and one shaft that comes out of a hole that someone drilled in the case that should not be there. For $74 you should have the correct mechanism, not a G.E Telechron clock movement pulled from a wall clock or a dead clock radio.
I'm getting rather sick of seeing this "no refunds, no returns" crap from sellers, if they read their user agreement they would see that fleabay's guarantee trumps whatever they put in the description. The other dumb one I see is "Payment must be made within "   " hours or the item will be relisted and a non paying bidder compliant filed", um, no you won't the buyer has seven days to pay unless they agree to cancel the sale.
I don't know why sellers try this B.S, if the movement is not what it's purported to be then they should take it back. Even if it was the right movement then what's the big deal?, relist it and sell it to someone else. I have a feeling that this guy knew this mechanism was screwed with and thought he would try unloading it anyhow, it's not like it was difficult to figure out.

Hmmm, Looks like I was lucky I forgot about that until it was to late to bid. Kirk, Good Luck on it, My vote would be to get the money back too.
