Alternative Radio Forum - Michael Dennis - 07-24-2008 05:30 PM

Maybe it's just a bad period, or maybe it's the economy/job market, or maybe I'm just irritable, but sometimes some of those fellas "over there" can be aggravating. I think I'm going to step away from the compooter for a while before I start hollering. Icon_evil

Well I visit there from time to time but I like Philco radio's so I spend more time here. I like the higher traffic over there but with higher traffic comes more trouble.

On the other hand I wish this place would pick up a bit. I try to help as much as I can but I'm still wet behind the ears. When I need help its usually something obscure or uncommon so replies are few.

Well guys, I've posted the question about opening another forum room for alternative radios. Meaning sets besides Philco's. While not trying to turn this site into the Ohio Turnpike, it would allow us a little more room for other sets. Which most of us own. Ron is all for it if you guys would chime in about it. Plus we get the Regen Radio King here, Exray and his amazing circus of RF tubeology Icon_lol

ARF, like any high traffic site, is also going to suffer idiots. A few bad apples over there, and plenty of good folk also. Mike, I know what you mean. There are a few that get under my skin. But I just ignore them and their post. I'm sure I've gotten under a few folks nails myself. I've made several friends from that site. I don't always agree with the mods or forum policy. But that can be said for many sites I visit. Nothing personal.

One last thing to add. I believe ARF could get back to it's roots, if it dumped the clubhouse. Even for a little while to clean out the kitchen. A few ants can spoil all the meat. I remember when the clubhouse had very little activity. Questions were answered and seriously delved into. It lacked the animosity from member to member that now seems to exist. Before all the silly or rotten post that have shown up there in the last couple of years, the traffic was lower. But radio repair seemed to be taken more seriously. Quoting a friend, it seems several need a place to hang out and wonder out loud what makes the world tick. Plenty of blogs and others sites for that crap! Just my two cents.

Yes, I will add a section for non-Philco sets IF there is sufficient interest.

Some folks here asked me several times about opening a section devoted to Philco advertising. I did...and now, no one uses it! I don't want to add any sections that aren't going to have any traffic, you know? Icon_confused

Hi all,

I too would like to see a non-Philco section if it is possible. Not that I would want to see this forum become overly busy, but there are times when I would like to seek advice from some of our forum regulars on an x or z brand radio that is giving me trouble. I would not do that now because there is no real platform for it here. Just my thoughts.

I agree with all of the above statements. There's a justifiable use for a non-Philco category because there's a lot of good heads here that know radios in general.

I wouldn't expect it to become bubbling with activity because the ARF can field most of those questions with ease but having the common logic and bond here "its just like that cap in the Philco 79 that we were discussing last week" sometimes makes for easier understanding.

I'm game for a "Brand X" place on this site.

I've got a few I'd like some more info on when that happens. Just didn't want to clog up the forums here with my 'junk'.

Ditto that, plus there is much to be discussed about radios in general (without the noise) that would apply to any Philco radios but not _specifically_ for those.

The clubhouse is not the problem. It lost its soul by not being proactive or following its own rules.

Well said, Syl.

I made a posting here for, basically, the very reason you have mentioned. Well...read the thread and draw your own conclusions.

Okay, I've added a new forum entitled "Other Radios (Non-Philco)."

It may be found here, as well as on the Phorum Index.

- BDM - 07-26-2008 02:13 AM

Syl, I never thought the clubhouse as a vehicle was the problem. I'm well aware it's the folks driving. But, I don't see someone going in and cleaning house like a bouncer. The flame wars would start from one end to the other. The vehicle needs to be garaged, then Alan and the mods need to decide how to re-open it with new or current rules, being enforced!

Cool !

Be prepared for a flooding after the week-end.

Ron,

Thanks for adding the new forum. I'm sure it will be well used.

BTW, I see you received a couple 'bites' on the wanted speaker. Great! Sometimes a picture helps a great deal.

Fellas,

I've always said that most of what goes on at ARF is good and positive. Most of the guys there are 1st. rate all the way. With a larger crowd, there'll always be a few sourballs to spoil it occasionally. But, I apologize for having a wildhair somewhere.. Some of the guys there are a bit intolerant of others who might not fit their profile of what's right, and just, and fair, and, perhaps, expected. I sure don't hold any long-term personal grudges. I would personally welcome a forum wherein we could discuss radios other than Philco, but I must confess that my 1st. loyalty lies with the Philadelphia Battery Company and thereafterward. Always been very good to me! I don't think I've ever met an old radio I didn't like. Thanks, guys, for letting me vent. I feel better now. I think. I wish I were rich. Icon_redface
