Oscillator 06620 repair? - NV3G - 10-07-2008

I am working on a Philco 89 ( Code 123 ). The Oscillator is not working. I removed Oscillator Coil 06620 and found the winding between pins 1 and 2 open. Pin 1 goes to the cathode of the Detector / Oscillator tube ( 77).

I removed the coil. I can not see any windings. Please tell me how I go about repairing this coil?

All suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,
nv3g

I baked the Oscillator 06620 coil for 30 minutes at 200 degrees in the oven. It removed all of the wax. I can now see the outer winding that goes to the cathode of the Detector Oscillator tube. I may try to rewind this outer winding myself.

You are on the right track now. Icon_smile

If you run into any difficulty rewinding that coil, let us know. It is actually quite easy to do.

I use #38 gauge wire for the outer winding which always goes bad. Be sure and pay attention to the direction the original winding was wound, placement of the winding on the coil, etc. Remove the old nitrocellulose insulator whcih the original winding was wound on, and use new Mylar tape instead; the breakdown of that nitrocellulose insulator is part of the reason the original windings fail.

I had a similar problem with my Model 60 and had to rewind one winding on the oscillator and antenna coil. Followed Ron's suggestion on rewinding and worked out fine. I wasn't able to find #38 wire and used #36 instead. Radio plays beautifully now.

The oscillator coil winding going to the cathode of the Oscillator/Detector tube is rewound. The oscillator is now working properly. I need to change two resistors that have gone very high in value.

Thanks to everyone who gave me suggestions. Another Philco radio has been resurrected from not working at all to a working radio. Hurrah!
