Philco 41-280 Howl - Guest - 11-09-2008

I have a Philco 41-280 that I listen to regularly. However I can only listen via the push buttons, because if I try to tune manually there is a loud howl from about 600-1000 Khz. But this howl is not heard when I tune the coils for the push buttons.

Thanks, Michael T. Downes, an vagrant from the ARF.

Wire positioning is the first thing that comes to my mind. Assuming you have recapped the set, are the new capacitors in the same position as the originals? Was the position of the wires disturbed significantly?

There should be a wire connected to one top terminal of the tuning condenser, and wrapped around the other terminal (not connected). Is this wire in place? Although, I don't think this would cause howling.
