Philco 59S Help - dseverson - 07-13-2016

Hi, Folks. I'm back with another request for assistance. Recently, I purchased a 59s for $5 and did the recap, replaced the resistors, and rewound the coils for practice. When I fired it up, there was no sound. Before I take voltage readings (I have to get a battery for my multimeter), do any of you have suggestions or tips?

Here is a link to the schematic: http://www.nostalgiaair.org/pagesbymodel/790/M0013790.pdf

Thanks in advance.

Dave

It goes against my convictions to recommend doing anything before you could look at voltages and test the tubes.
I don't like blind troubleshooting.

Even if I told you to check the speaker (and I don't) - it requires a working meter.

Looks like a scrunched up model 84. You know real voltmeters don't use batteries.

Indeed, looks like the 80jr regen.

Good news, sort of.  One of the tubes wasn't seated properly so now the radio hums and hums loudly when I touch the top of the 77 second detector tube.  Sounds like a start.

I will get a real voltmeter.

At this point you can try putting a 460kc signal to the cap of the 77 closest to the front panel. Adjust #8 and 15 for max signal from spkr.
