Doubts with 80jr model - Moti - 09-04-2016

Hello, I bought a model 80 B. and the variable capacitor has 10 sheets in each section and has room for one more. I have seen many pictures and all I see are 11 per section. There are several models? I also see some who have the square cans and other round coils. could be oldest round? a greeting

Welcome to the Phorum. If you could post some pictures that would be nice.
Sounds like you mean the plates of the variable capacitor. I'm sure someone on here can help you with your questions.

Welcome to the Phorum!

The tuner capacitor in my 80 has 10 plates in each of the two rotor sections (the part the moves when you turn the tuning dial) and 9 plates in the stator section (the part that does not move when turning the tuning dial).

Here is a link with instruction to add photographs to your posts if that would help you:

Hello Bob. thank you very much for your reply and especially forgive my bad English. He speaks from Spain. I am very happy to know that no missing sheet !! hehe. more sheets could have improved reception? You radio has boats round or square tune? I think our manufacturing radios may be a little earlier, could be ?? Thank you

Same here.

Both rotor sections have 10 vanes and the stator sections have 9 plates.

A delicate cleanup, maybe light brushing of De Oxit on the nasty area at the end? You may be able to avoid having to replace.

My 80 has round covers over the coils. See my thread at: http://philcoradio.com/phorum/showthread.php?tid=7006&pid=45170#pid45170

Paul, I think that's a "before" image on my tuner cap.

Paul, creo que eso es un "antes" imagen en mi gorra sintonizador.

Bob, I've seen the pictures of your radio and is equal to mine (round cans), you have left the bright, how did you do it?? I have documented and carrying 11 sheets in the tuner, carrying the square cans. possibly our radios are older.

Welcome Moti,

> more sheets could have improved reception?

Not so much what it would do is lower the frequency that you are receiving. If you removed sheets (plates) it would raise the frequency some what.

The shape of the coil shields is not all that important what is is whether or not the coils inside are good?? It's common for them to be bad (open windings). Repair is not very difficult if you have some small gauge magnet wire.

Bob mentioned these links on another thread for the model 80.

If you haven't seen them, there are several modifications suggested by Ron and posted on Chuck's website that can help the performance of the 80.

I think you are asking me, "how did the chassis become bright and shiney?"

My chassis had a lot of rust. I removed the rust with Naval Jelly. Then I painted the chassis with a Rustoleum paint, I think I used aluminum colored paint.

Something about after my tuner and I feel like I am being mocked, which I deserve.

thank you for your help. I'll start restoring these days. someone has made the modifications proposed in the above links ?? radio works best?

RE: Doubts with 80jr model - klondike98 - 09-05-2016

Yes, those modifications have been done many times. They were recommended by Ron Ramirez, founder of this Phorum and well known for his expertise on Philco radios.
