70 Bottom base finishing ? - Silentphilco - 02-07-2017

On a 70 does anyone know how the bottom of the radio was finished ? Bottom part where feet attach.  I have read many restoration articles but this was never mentioned.  Was it bare wood, stained, painted ?
Thks.

I can make a front panel in my wood shop that looks original or repair the one I have that would show some veneer lines where the new material is cut in on the wood grill.  There are quite a few areas that would be affected as I had to remake some of the curve sections that were broken.

Torn between keeping it original or making it look perfect.

It sounds like the original has some serious flaws...if you've got the shop and skills, I'd make a new one.  Alternatively you can touch base with Phorum member Steve Davis.  He's been making reproduction cabinets for quite awhile.  See: http://www.philcoradio.com/davis.htm

Since your two threads are about the cabinet for the same 70, I've merged them into one thread to keep the topic together. You can modify the orginal title if you like to something like... Philco 70 cabinet questions or something similar..

again..welcome!

Do you have a picture of the original?

Hi, and welcome to the Phorum.

In response to your first question, I had to look a few of my original cabinets. It appears, there is little to no finish on the bottom of the cabinets. The inside of the cabinet, including the top side of the bottom looks to have a light coat of toned lacquer, with no clear coat.
