RE: Philco "Super" 19 - Steve Davis - 04-04-2017

This evening I started making some dog-bone resisters for the "super 19". While working, I had the super tuned to WSM 650. I had a strong signal, it was coming in loud and clear. After a few minutes, the radio developed a crackling/ frying sound. Using an insulated alignment tool, I started poking around. When I touched the bias resistor, the radio stopped playing. When I pushed on terminal on the end opposite the grounded end, I could see a tiny arc where the terminal wraps around the resistor. I replaced the resistor with one from a parts chassis. Now she is playing beautifully again. There are still a few things I need to do. Beside the dog-bone resistors, Need to install the mounting brackets for two of the tube shields. Right now the 75 is the only tube with a shield. I will be installing the "Super 19" in a reproduction cabinet that I finished about a month ago.

If you ever run into a stubborn, uncooperative Philco 19, 71, 89 or 91  that the oscillator refuses to work, Ron's "super"  mod IS the solution! Icon_thumbup Icon_thumbup Icon_thumbup Icon_thumbup

I recently did the mod changing the 36 tube to the 77 tube with great success. Originally I had this 19 oscillating pretty well across the band with the original 36 tube. But over time it started dropping out below 1100 kHz or so.

So I made the 77 tube modification, and it works real well now.

That Philco chassis is like an armored tank. I had a heck if a time drilling holes and centering the replacement socket.

I'll be interested in how your adventure with the 6A7 mod works out Steve.

I have had a few projects going so, it has been a while since I have worked on the "Super 19".

I made a few reproduction dogbone resistors and replaced the film resistors that I had installed during the restoration.

I had made a reproduction cabinet for the "Super 19" last winter before I started the modification .

Chassis and speaker installed in new cabinet. I used a permanent magnet speaker because I have more chassis than I have original Philco speakers. My thought was since the chassis has been modified and cabinet is a reproduction, I would rather save my original speakers for other projects.

Speechless.
Magnificent job, Steve.

Hey...

I recently traded my nice Philco 19B, and then acquired another 19B from Kirk.

So...

This new acquisition will become a Super 19 as well! Icon_thumbup

When I start the work (and it will be awhile), I will start a new thread on it...
