I hate winter...and I HATE VECTREN!!! - Ron Ramirez - 01-31-2009 05:59 AM

Hello, infidels.

I have been absent the past few days courtesy of the ice storm that passed through the Midwest this past week.

I am currently without power, and have been for a few days. Our local energy monopoly, Vectren, is saying it could be next week before everyone's power is restored.

So, I'm sending this message from my lady friend's computer.

You won't be "seeing" much of me for a while as a result, and you can thank Vectren for that. Those rat bastards thought it more important to restore power to Roberts Stadium for a lousy Toby Keith concert tonight than to restore power to any of the 46,000 people in the Evansville area still without power!

No, I am not a happy camper...I am only hoping that the pipes in my house do not freeze and burst.

If anyone else out there is suffering a similar predicament...I feel for you, folks.

Addendum:

Anyone and everyone is welcome into the Philco Phorum. HOWEVER, if all you are going to do is gripe and complain because your account has to be activated...or become condescending towards me...then all I can say is, Tell your story walking, Johnson. Go straight to the Antique Radio Forum, as people with attitudes are NOT welcome here. That's all.

Hello Ron! Thanks for checking in here. My nephews went thru the same thing ( different scenario for no power)after Ike hit Houston for several weeks. Hang in there!, AEP Texas will be sending help to your area soon if called upon by Vectren! Power pole restoration Trucks o-plenty, with chainsaw operators if needed to clear the broken limbs!! Hopefully, many other nearby States can help as well get your power back up very soon!Im sure they are trying as well! Sure hope your staying-warm and no water pipes broken! No infidels here at all from my location, just best-wishes for a speedy recovery from the ice! As for as the alternative site, only a few left over there knows the difference between there "ice, and a hole in the ground" anyways! No pun intended!!! Icon_wink

Sorry to learn of your troubles Ron, and BAH!-Phooey! on Vectren who left you in the dark and cold! To diss you in favor of something as unimportant as a venue in which Toby Keith was to perform, with all due respect to Mr. Keith and his fans, is totally reprehensible! What about really needy people who had to go without power? I mean, somebody's very life support may have been on the line and to adopt such a " We don't give a rat's posterior about you" 'tude is inexcuseable. And nobody's plumbing should be put in jeopardy either, that's a crass dismissal of a city's very citizenery. If that were to happen in my city you can bet I'd be burning up the editorial newspaper page with a blistering rant about it. I've been known to absolutely nuke similar creeps for pulling bonehead stunts that endangered other people, in fact it was almost a year ago I bitched out a tv newscrew for getting in the way of the Fire Dept. just so they could scoop ratings by being first on the scene. I tore them a new backdoor! Icon_evil Hope you and everyone else is back on line soonest!

Mike

WOW! You do get those too eh?

They can either go to the Alternative or best, Nostalgiair, encouraging anonymous cowards posting.

Always the same bunch, venting elsewhere anonymously

Vectren=Bastards...As I see it, bastards is an euphemism.

Hi Syl

Oh yeah...that particular rant was directed at one individual in particular who is now banned permanently from the Phorum, for obvious reasons.

Electric-gas monopolies suck. Vectren bought natural gas last summer when the price was at its highest...and now they are all too happy to pass that high cost to us. You know, bend over and take it...you have no choice...unless you are lucky enough to have a woodburner (I don't).

Woodburner eh? Want to hear a good one? They want to forbid the use of any wood burner, stove, foyer, you name it, in Montreal.
Apparently, it pollutes more than a car is creates carcinogenic particles while burning...(this reminds me of the Asbestos panic...)
What is this world coming to? Everything causes cancer nowadays...

It reminds me about the joke I like to tell friends...
"My (ex)wife had to live with a cancer for over 26 years, but now she's doing fine."
"26 years? Wow, what happened, is she in remission now?"
"Nope, she divorced...(I'm a Cancer...as in astrology...)"

You could buy natural gas from the Russians for cheaper. But then, you'd have to sit straight while watching TV.

Hello Ron,

Now had it been 46,000 consumers without power down in certain parts of Hurricane Katrina country, the press, the prez, the congress and certain others, would have all insisted that the national guard, army, and whoever else was necessary, be dispatched down there immediately to get it all restored TODAY. It would have been declared a national disaster area.

Ron:
If you can get to your house at least turn off the main water connection in the basement, and put the more valuable Philco's on top of the junkers. That way, if there is a burst pipe, at least it will be limited to the water in your pipes, and give your insurance broker a call. They might have more hints to mitigate the damage. Hope everything turns out well.

After all, tubes float, and transistors don't.

I hate winter too. Let's start a phorum on tropical retirement spots. My favorate so far is Sanya, China.

Syl - I like your joke, good one...

Paul - good points...

Codefox - oh yes, I have turned off the main water valve, attempted to drain the pipes, used RV antifreeze in the toilet bowl and a little down the drains to at least get into the P traps.

We shall see what happens...and thanks to all for the kind words...

Most folks in the mid-Southern States now hate elec providers such as Entergy & All other elec providers since the big hurricanes! Blame it on Bush!!( hee hee).., everybody else did? Truth is, those energy-provider companies cant control mother-nature, never could, never will. About the only way to stay fairly comfortable in mother-natures major events is own your own power-generators,and/or, a good ol fashioned wood-stove or fireplace. As for me, a good storm-cellar also comes in handy in springtime ( tornado season) in w tx! Cant dodge all of em, I been very lucky so-far!! I sure hope Al Gore is up there helping cut limbs in the northern States trying to help everyone after this major Ice Storm? Anyone seem him?, or is he still out promoting his "global warming" issues nonsense? My best wishes for a quick thaw-out from the recent Ice Storms for all my Northern Friends indeed! Im sure some weather-researchers (politicians) are looking into this recent ice event in Washington DC, and "scratchin" their heads, and are ready to send ol "Al" your way to splain all this!? Reckon? Just a thought. Good News is ,... springtime is just around the corner!! Hang in there folks!!

Why would anyone go to a Toby Keith concert? Anyone that sings songs with titles like, "How Do You Like Me Now" or "What About Me" has to be a big
headed ****** !

I think it would be best to wish for a slow thaw out, a quick thaw will result in other problems such as flooding like they experienced in the Seattle area earlier this month. I'm very much in favor of wood heat, at least as a backup for occasions such as this. Last year we had a blackout for two days due to wind storms, a wood stove would have made things much more tolerable.

Hi Ron,

I hate the winter weather too and we certainly have our share of it up here in Michigan. This winter has been particularly bad, with lots of snow and extremely cold weather. We also had an ice storm, although it was not nearly as bad as the one you are currently experiencing.

As Randal suggested, I too think a portable generator is the only way to go. I purchased a small 4kw unit for a few hundred dollars 25 years ago when we first moved here and have used it ever since. The power in our area has proved to be quite unreliable over the years. I just used it again a little over a month ago when the power was out for 30 hours due to a severe windstorm. I have mine setup on a minimal basis. I just set it outside the garage door and plug it in to a 240 volt outlet in the garage and back feed the service panel, using a home made Romex jumper. Of course, with this method, you need to be technically savvy enough (which I know you are) to switch off the main breaker and switch your loads with the panel breakers as necessary to control the maximum load. It is a bit of a kluge arrangement, but it is good enough to keep the furnace and refrigerators running and some lights. It sure beats the alternative. One thing though, I am always careful to drain and run the gas out of it entirely, before I put it back in storage, so that I know it will be ready to go by just refueling it, since it could be one or more years before the next use. I have been using it for all of 25 years and it has never failed me when I needed it.

As far as the wood heat is concerned, I am in favor of that also. I use a 180,000 btu forced air wood furnace series ducted with my lp gas furnace and running on a separate thermostat. It will heat the whole house and garage nice and toasty warm on the coldest days. It does require power though, to operate the blower. If I forget to load it Icon_smile, the lp furnace which is set to a lower temperature comes on automatically, to prevent the house from getting too cold.

Anyway, I sure wish you the best under these terrible conditions and hope that you and your family come through this OK and without any serious damage to your home.

Regards,

Ed

Hi Ed

I came home from work this evening just to check on the house..and was THRILLED to discover that my power had finally been restored!

I currently live alone here, but my daughters live in Kentucky which was particularly hard hit by the recent storm; they received much more ice than those of us in the Evansville area. Anyway, my daughters had their power restored yesterday.

So all is well in Philcoland again. Icon_biggrin
