38-690 replica?? - Richie - 07-10-2018

Looking for some info. Can anyone tell anything on this tag.

Those tags were meant to be placed only on 38-116 sets. Someone took some creative liberties with your 38-690, unfortunately.

The back story:

During production of the 1938 models, Philco produced its ten millionth radio which happened to be a 38-116XX. To commemorate the event, Philco had those name tags made up for a limited time. The Philco dealer would have had the original purchaser's name engraved on the tag, whcih was then attached to the front of their new 38-116XX radio.

On second thought, perhaps this Walton Jones paid his local Philco dealer extra to have one of those tags put on his 38-690? It would not have been original or correct, but stranger things have happened in the world of Philco. Also - if it was done in 1938, the Philco dealer managed to place the tag crooked. This also leads me to believe it was done by some "collector" many years after the fact.

Bonus points if you can answer this question: Which manufacturer was known for engraving the name of the original purchaser on a tag affixed to the back of every one of their high-end radios? (Hint: they were doing this before Philco did.)

Dealer or no. What kind of hack would attach a commemorative tag that doesn't even belong there in the first place crookedly, so that it would be seen in full view for all posterity? Gag me with a wooden spoon.

Ding ding ding ding...we have a winner! It was indeed McMurdo Silver (Masterpiece V and VI). Give the gentleman a cigar. Icon_smile
