First Philco ... - Guest - 05-12-2010

Greetings everyone,

My neighbor just gave me her Philco 37-116 console, which is in fair to poor shape, but I intend to start restoring it soon. This is my first Philco!

Quick question about the search engine on this sight. I did a search on 37-116 and got no results. I took a look at some of the other posts and searched on model numbers that were in the title of these posts, but again no hits were found when I did a search on those model numbers. Is there something peculiar about searching on numbers?

Thanks,
Stan

Go to http://www.philcoradio.com Then you will need a schematic http://www.nosalgiaair.org go here . Then go to http://www.vacuumtubesinc.com Then you can ask any question here and get some good advice .

Hi Stan, and welcome!

I just tried it, and sure enough, the Phorum Search function does not work for model numbers, as you described.

For now, just use the search function found at the upper right hand corner of any page on my site:
http://www.philcoradio.com/

That will bring up not only any page on my website, but also any topic in the Philco Phorum.

Sorry the Phorum search did not work for you. Thanks for letting me know.

Re: First Philco ... - TimC - 05-12-2010

I have found the same issue for certain models.
A message would appear telling me the search term was too common or something like that.
In regards to the searches that work, I would click on one of the results and look at it. If I wanted to return to the search results list I would see a "page expired" message so I would have to repeat the search...
Not a big deal and I figured there's a reason for it.

Thanks Ron. The search at the main site works perfectly.

I had already downloaded the schematic from nostalgiaair.com, and I'm seeing this radio is quite complex. I'll be taking the radio out of the cabinet this week-end to take a look, and I'm sure I'll be back with plenty of questions!

Being new to this as well, I thought it was just me. I didn't want to ask about the search issue cause I thought everyone would be thinking that "if this guy can't figure out how to search the site, he certainly will not be able to get that 86 working." I feel better now, but not for Ron since he has to fix the problem.

@Matt, I had the same thoughts going through my head as well ! LOL

Stan,
Good luck on your restore. I'll check back often to see how you're doing. I'll let you know how I make out as well. Fortunately my cabinet is in great shape. I just need to go over the guts. I'm going to put together the "Dim-buld Tester" as described on the antiqueradio.org site. Ron has posted a link to the site on my post. Seems like a good place to start.

take care.
Matt

I'm current working on an early 38-116 which is a lot like your radio. It hasn't been too bad except for a couple of capacitors that are buried in the RF sub-chassis. I also highly recommend ordering a schematic from Chuck Schwarks at the Philco Repair Bench because you get all the Philco service literature with it and a very high resolution 11x17 schematic. Here is the link, http://www.philcorepairbench.com/schematics.htm . I also have a thread going on my current repair on the Antique Radio Forum here, http://www.antiqueradios.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=135859 . There is a real good tip on how to recap this radio without taking it completely apart from John (k9uwa). Plus a few photos that might help.

Have fun
Rod

See the "Announcements" section for more about the search function.
