38-62 new volume problem - Chicago Jimmy - 07-25-2011

Hi Fellas,I need some help...
My problem is the sound is crisp and clear with medium loudness with the volume turned all the way down...when volume is turned up it stays around the same loudness (maybe a little lower) but the sound gets a little muffled and has quite a bit of bass. I took apart the volume/on-off switch completely and cleaned it with deoxIt D5, wiped it dry, then pryed up the 2 contacts a hair. The channels all line up on the dial and come in very good. I tried swapping out the tubes one at a time. I also changed all but 1 resistor (inside I.F.trans), rebuilt all 3 bakelites and changed all caps. I'm not great with schematics... and still a newbie on radios. Any help would be appreciated.

Well I'd start with the easy stuff, try subbing another speaker, just disconnect the voice coil winding and patch to a PM speaker 4 or 8 ohms would be fine. See how that sounds. Let us know.

Ditto. I have a set that I Successfully repaired several years ago and it developed the same symptoms. I spent a lot of time messing with it and it turned out the speaker was at fault.

I swapped out speakers with my model 89B...same problem, it did not change. Thanks for the quick replies.

Today I tried swapping out the volume pot...no luck.

Re: 38-62 new volume problem - codefox1 - 07-27-2011

Is your set a 38-620? If so there seems to be a tone control associated with the power on switch, and there are some capacitors there that might be bad.

Codefox1...Thanks for trying to figure out my problem. It's a 38-62 tabletop art deco. The same schematics of a 37-62.

Only other thing I can think of is a bad output transformer. You could patch one in (just about anything will do) and see what happens. That .006 from the plate to ground of the 6F6 should be at least 1000 volt rated.

Could someone look this over and see if anything looks out of place. I'm still learning schematics. The rebuilt cap can connections??[attachment=0]

Just cleaned off the chassis where the ground for the volume pot is soldered on. The volume sound is clear closest to on/off switch. When rotated to higher volume...the volume level lowers a little & gets more bass. I tried my other speaker again, and still the same. I think I wired something wrong. I rechecked all my soldering for a bad connection. Here's a link to my schematic. http://www.nostalgiaair.org/PagesByModel/211/M0013211.pdf

I found a bad resister #25, changed it but still same problem.

When you installed 32B the one with the green wire the + side of that cap goes to the chassis ( the others in that unit should have the - to the chassis) and the - side goes to the BC resistor. Did you wire it with the + or the - to the chassis?

She's up and running!! I first want to thank everyone that responded. I would like to say a big kudos to 7estatdef for all the PM's he took the time out to help me. Thank You!
I told you guys I was a newbie...when I rebuilt the bakelites #16 was reinstalled and I soldered the center of the volume control to the center lug. It should of been to the outside lug. It's sounding great..and back together.

Your welcome! I meant to mention you did a great job under the chassis! Very nice looking set!
