My "NEW" Philco 37-116 - Gene Pederson - 02-14-2013

Well I finally found one! Or I should say the one I want. It is in very nice overall cosmetic condition. The perfect piece for my genuine 1937 Philco aerialIcon_biggrin AND I have an original 1937-116 OWNER'S manual on the way here.

This leaves only two other sets I really wanted.....a 1938-116, and a 1938-690 of which I have found both and am in the process of making arrangements to pick them up! It is a GREAT Valentines Day!

That's a real JEWEL, Gene!!! Did you have it shipped, or did you pick it up yourself? Also, do you have to re-cap this chassis,or has it already been done? It looks like they put a new power cord and speaker wires in it, maybe? I wonder why few repairmen seldom install rubber grommets in the chassis where the wires go through-holds the power cord tight, eliminates that knot, and makes for a nice clean look. (Even though I realize they did that kind of thing at the factory). I like that service sticker with the four digit phone number, seems you could call that number now and chat with Myrtle for a spell... Are you going to install the aerial, or just display it?

Thanks Electro!
I drove to Massachusetts yesterday to pick it up.The guy didn't think it was going to fit in my car, an '02 Caddy. I don't know how much work has been done to it. He had it plugged in and playing. But there is a low hum so I am sure it needs caps and probably resistors. My aerial will be for display only. I will use another wire antenna to hook up to the set. I just think the '37 looks much nicer than the '38.

He also had a model 70 baby grand that looks really nice, and a 37-61 that I bought for $20. I also love the cathedrals, but have a hard time in my mind justifying the prices for the 70's and 90's for a broadcast band only radio.

Gene,
Could you post the 37-116 owners manual to the downloadable files here when you receive it? I have a 37-116 I'm slowly working on and sure others would like to have the manual. Thanks, John

Very nice find! Sounds like you are getting your Philco collection buttoned up in short order! Icon_smile

That looks like a very well kept example of a 37-116, no rust or damage to the finish. As for the Philco 70s and Philco 90 cathedral sets they may be broadcast band only but they are both excellent performers, they are also of a iconic design. Personally I can see no reason to pay top dollar for either a 90 or 70, there are plenty enough of either set to go around, even more so with Philco 20s. Unlike the 1933-38 Philcos, many sets that do have shortwave bands don't really have a useful spread on the bands, everything is too close together.

That's a beautiful radio Gene! Finding one with nice original finish and grille cloth is a real plus.

RE: My "NEW" Philco 37-116 - Gene Pederson - 02-22-2013

Thanks for all the great comments guys! As soon as I saw it in person I knew it was the one. The previous owner told me it was in nice shape, but sometimes pictures don't show a lot of detail.

jontz, have you picked up your set?

Gene

Hey, Gene. How about some pics of the 42-400? Need some more eye candy!:8)

RE: My "NEW" Philco 37-116 - jontz - 02-22-2013

Gene,

Unfortunately I had to pass on it. Despite the pictures the guy had sent me and the answers he gave me to my questions it was not in the shape I was expecting when I got there. The chasis was all in tact, but the cabinet was rougher than I was comfotable with given the price we had discussed. It had a couple of BAD gouges out of one side and the top was little rough as well, although it didn't worry me nearly as much as the side. I thought about taking it anyway but I've learned to trust the little voice inside that says "walk away". In fact I also remembered how you opened this thread: "Well I finally found one! Or I should say the one I want." That stuck with me as well, so I guess I owe you one!

I really want a 37-116 and someday the right one will come along. That day just wasn't Wednesday, Feb 20th, 2013 Icon_biggrin
