Philco 116PX is Home! - Skip - 03-29-2013

Well here it is. This thing is huge! I did not expect it to be this big. It look real good, from what I can tell it looks like the original finish, if it was redone it was a long ago. Missing a couple of knobs but no problem, have them in my knob box. Record player looks to be missing a part or two (speed selector), will need to see what one actually looks like. The motor is loose on one side and the rubber mounts are dry rotted. I will have many questions when I tackle this.

I brought it up on the varic watching the voltages and amps, no shorts, slight hum, and dial bulbs light up. Someone long ago did update the e-caps under the chassis but left the originals on top. I will have many questions when I tackle this. It will have to wait for a while, weather is getting nice and I have several consoles and tabletops ready to be refinished and mated with their restored chassis.
Ron PM me with what pictures you want and how.

Skip,
Looks like we both got a rare bird! I just picked this up today. Have you restored yours yet? Any Idea what the doors on the sides are for? Any info or pics you can provide from yours would be greatly appreciated!  Icon_thumbup

Wow! I knew these existed, but never saw one before!

It looks to use the General Industries "slasher" changer made in Elyria Ohio.
The doors on the sides would be for record storage. Probably tilt out about 6 inches and have slots for record albums.

Amazing!

This thread starts to remind me the M&M commercial "They do exist!" Icon_smile

If the doors were for record storage, there's no evidence of such either on the door, or inside, looking in from the back on my unit. Is it possible removing the doors is to affect the acoustics of the cabinet?

RE: Philco 116PX is Home! - theradiofox - 05-01-2017

That is odd...

An example of this would be an unusual Zenith I have which has fold out doors with record slots.

It would seems strange to use them to alter acoustics, but I cannot see what other function they would have.

I guess it doesn't matter, you have a wonderful rare Philco! Icon_e_biggrin

Steve raises a good point. The Philco 500X and 501X (1935 model console radio-phonographs using the 16 chassis) also had fold-out doors with record slots, similar to the Zenith to which Steve posted the link to a photo.

So, Jeff...you're saying that the doors on your 116PX are removable, and have no slots? What is inside? Are they storage areas or just open into the speaker compartment?

RE: Philco 116PX is Home! - PhilcoPhan1936 - 05-01-2017

Ron, they are just open to the speaker compartment. I'll post a pic soon. Stay tuned. Icon_lol

RE: Philco 116PX is Home! - PhilcoPhan1936 - 05-01-2017

Here's a snapshot of mine from the back. As you can see, there is no evidence of any shelving or other structure to hold records.

I feel like we are hijacking Skip's original post, so I will start a new thread documenting mine. I'll have tons more pics and details there. Icon_thumbup I should get to it tonight. I have to clean up and head out to work.

It would be very helpful if Skip would jump in here and tell us if his is like yours, Jeff, or if his has the divider(s) and/or storage compartments.

Or maybe he no longer has his 116PX?

SKIP?!?
