Warped tuning coupler on Philco 38-1 - Kenradio - 06-14-2013

Good evening, I picked up a Philco 38-1 two days ago and am in the process of
restoring it. I replaced the AC cord, rebuilt the lamp sockets, replaced a broken magnetic tuning switch and now I'm working on the automatic tuning mechanism--the coupler that connects the assy. to the tuning capacitor is warped--is there an easy way to fix it? It is very hard and brittle. Thanks, Ken

Are you sure it is warped? They are in fact somewhat....looking warped.

Hi Morzh, the rubber/fiber parts of the coupler are hard and twisted causing the shaft of the automatic tuning assy. and the variable capacitor to be mis-aligned. I have a Philco 37-9 & 38-116 where the tuning couplings are in very good shape. I may soak the coupler in WD-40 for a day or so to see if the rubber/fiber parts soften up and see if that fixes it.
