My first antique radio - texan1325 - 11-15-2013

I bought a Philco Model 48-1256 at a local antique dealer. I did do the unthinkable and plug it in before re-capping it. This is my first one. Luckily I didn't release the smoke out of any components. It did have a loud ac hum so a recapping is in order for the electrolytics and papers. And I am pretty sure the crystal cartridge or wiring to it is bad. Just wanted to share and introduce myself. I do have 20 years experience in electronics just nothing this old. Always wanted to pick this up as a hobby though.

Later,
Russell

Welcome to the Phorum!! Lots of good info and good folks here.

That radio combo unit is a curious design, I believe it uses a tube based, full wave, voltage doubler like a 50X6/50Y6. Since it's a transformerless set (not an AC/DC because of the doubler) about the worst that could have happened was a capacitor blowing up, or a resistor burning up.

Arran. You are correct it has a 50X6 rectifier tube.

Welcome to the Phorum! I have the 1946 version of that set and I keep meaning to get it going. I always thought they were neat.

Welcome to the Phorum. Whatever you need to know about tube radios can be found here!

Welcome to the forum. I believe the record player is a D-10. If so, I have an extra one sitting in my garage. It's not in very good shape, but if you need some parts, just ask.

Welcome to the phorum!!! You do know that you've started a vicious circle with that set. You'll probably spend more on vintage vinyl to play on it than you will spend on the set and refurbishing!! Enjoy!!! Take care, Gary
