Finally - a real radio hauler.

I've been sort of wanting an older, full size station wagon for awhile now, chiefly for going to radio swap meets.

On Labor Day, I finally acquired one - a 1996 Buick Roadmaster Limited Estate Wagon.

It's huge - one of the last true land yachts. Loaded with power equipment. And lots of cargo space; even more with the back seat folded down.

Just what every radio collector needs - a Collector's Edition vehicle.



The ornament is dirty because I drove it home from the St. Louis area, and the last hour or so of the journey was in darkness. So this ornament, as well as the entire front end of the car, received the usual amount of bugs during the trip.

1996 was the last year for the Roadmaster, so Buick put "Collector's Edition" hood ornaments on the 1996 Roadmasters to mark the end of an era.

Ron, can I ask how much you paid for it? Reason is that I'm looking for a radio hauler myself, but I suspect you paid more than I have to spend on a vehicle, which is right arount $2300. I've seen '96 Roadmasters on craigslist and they're generally around $4200 or so, depending on condition. I was thinking a mini van or a station wagon.

Hi Ron. I see over on the "alternate forum" some people are getting up in arms in your post with the usual sarcasm and backbiting. That's one reason I absolutely refuse to post there any more. I'm sick of these guys acting like little children. Seems a person can't start an innocent thread without it becoming a whiny bickering fest. I mean, good gosh, GROW UP!!!

I often wonder why I bother posting anything there. I guess I was just happy with my purchase and wanted to share it with everyone.

Yeah, I noticed this morning my thread on the Roadmaster is turning into a political push-and-shove; I'm sure the ARF Thought Police will probably lock it soon.

It isn't just the Antique Radio Forum that has trolls. I found a Buick forum online which I thought would be good to be in since I have this thing now, but I've found it, too, has at least one troll; a sarcastic a**hole whose comments really pissed me off this morning.

Thanks, Mike, for the compliments and well wishes. (Speaking of which, my latest blood work came back normal; cancer-free!) I could not find a Roadmaster Estate in my area, which is why I went to the St. Louis area to get this one. I found it on Craigslist!

Glad to hear your latest blood work came back cancer free. Hearing that makes me very happy! I know how it is, you find something really great and you just want to share the good news with those who will be happy for you. Oh, you went out of state to find the Roadmaster. Well, however you did it , sounds like you're happy with it. I hope it turns out to be a rugged and dependable vehicle for you. I wish you the best of luck with it.

Yes, I too get pissed at some sarcastic comments people make. Kinda takes some of the joy away doesn't it? Seems some folks aren't happy unless they're arguing or making snide commentary. Me, I share another person's joy and am glad for them. Just dwell on the positive, 'cause there's plenty of that from the sound of your find! I hope it wasn't too expensive. But, I'm so glad you're doing so well with your health, and with finding a good vehicle. Hope you have a great day!!!

Sorry Chuck and Mike, I missed the two posts before Mike's last post.

Chuck, this thing is amazingly roomy! With the back seat folded down, I think a fellow might be able to haul three Zenith Stratospheres. Not that I expect to ever be lucky enough to find one for substantially less than the going five-figure rate.

Mike - I paid $2000 for this Roadmaster; it was listed at $2200. It does have 170K on the odometer. Like you, I did not want to spend a lot on one, nor could I. In fact I will be selling my Grand Am to try and recoup some of the money spent on the Roadmaster. As I mentioned above, I could not find one in my immediate area. I found a '95 in Louisville with 150K but they wanted $4995! So I started searching online...looked at every "for sale" list I could find online except for...Craigslist.

When I thought of trying Craigslist, I looked at every one in a 150-200 mile radius of little ol' Ferdinand, and the St. Louis Craigslist was the last one I checked.

And, lo and behold, there it was, in Collinsville, not far from the Brooks catsup bottle.

Drove up there on Labor Day, checked it out, drove it, bought it, now I have to spiff up my Grand Am and say goodbye to it. I have to say, I will miss getting 29-30+ MPG on highway trips in the Grand Am, but I could not carry anything in it.

Mike, I can email some other sources for you to check if you are really interested in finding a Roadmonster of your own. It seems like I saw one or two up your way?

There is some cool stuff there, that Corvair van would be cool. I almost had a VW bus lined up a few years ago, but the deal fell through. All dreams right now with my money situation. I gotta quit buying and start saving for a while again.
