90 dial drive mechanism repair
#1

The 90 that I'm working on has a very sloppy dial drive mechanism; the shaft has a little slot worn in it, and the matching hole in its bracket is worn, too. I have some ideas from old posts on the ARF, but I thoght that I would ask here.

I fixed it; I found an old hollow tuning shaft (to use as a bushing) in my assorted junk (probably a shaft from one of those late 40s Zenith sets), which had a quarter-inch I.D. I slid it over the tuning shaft, and carefully centered the shaft over the original hole. I used a fine-point Sharpie marker to draw a circle around the new bushing, and reamed/filed the bracket to the diameter of the bushing. I then pressed it into place and soldered it, trimming the new bushing to about one-quarter inch or so. The dial was then reassembled, and the mechanism was oiled. It now works perfectly, and should be good for another 74 years.
