Can someone help with info? Nova-Tech "Air o' Ear"
I recently picked up a Nova-Tech "Air o' Ear" model 5BA. It's a 'modern' (50's-60's?) all tube LF AM MF HF VHF reciever with slide rule dial tuning.
I've found some pics of a bunch of other Nova-Tech's out there but never any of this model. Also have not been able to locate a schematic. I'm going to need it as there is a cap that has one lead not connected, I've checked and can't determine where it should be connected. Need the schematic to help me here. |

Hello Phly Guy! If you can see the markings on the orig cap that one end is cut loose, and verify its uf's and voltage ratings, you can try "subbing", by simply "jumping in" a new cap of proper type with a couple test leads w/ alligator clips. (if electrolytic: ( follow +/- rules, or if it is a bypass type (no polarity),... you can simply jump in a new "sub-capacitor" of the correct value of orig cap to the end that is still connected. Then, "probe around" the other "loose end" to the other connections one-by-one just as a test to find correct location. Remember to "discharge" your test capacitor by touching the "probe end" back to chassis before trying different test points.
Most generally speaking, when using the old "probing around" type cap testing ( without orig schemat avail), a good ol trusty .05/600 v rating orange drop type will do. Look carefully with a magnifier glass, since the old cap was previously cut loose, for signs of previously attached solid-wire type orig cap "stubb" located nearby the end of the orig cut-end cap at all nearby tube-socket pins, etc. You just might get lucky in finding your lost orig cap connection! This method has worked for me many times in the past in replacing "stray" parts connections! Good luck, and remember to "discharge" your new test-cap, before touching each trial connection "test-points" individually! Use at least a 600 volt rating new test cap. Also, make sure the volume control is turned up so you can get good "audio", and orig antenna is good for receiving. This is what I call ("flying by the seat of your pants bench-testing),... but it Works sometimes indeed!! Sure beats trying to locate hard-to-find schemats that sometimes arent needed afterall!
