This saddens me greatly. Jim Fred was a tremendous writer who, through his "Antique Radio Corner" columns in the old Elementary Electronics magazine in the 1970s, influenced an entire generation to become involved in this great hobby of ours, including (in 1974) a then 14-year-old kid named Ron Ramirez.

It was an honor to finally meet Mr. Fred at an IHRS meet in the Indianapolis area in 1993 or 94, and present him with a copy of my book, Philco Radio: 1928-1942, for his influence on me in the radio collecting hobby.

Were it not for Jim Fred, I doubt that I would have ever become interested in the repair and restoration of vintage radios.
