Reception of certain Canadian stations in the USA
I decided to split this into a new topic since our discussion has drifted away from Dave Casazza's original post in this topic. You'll also notice this new topic is in the Bar & Grill since it is not limited to Philco home radios.

The station I referred to in the previous topic with all the hum is 1280, WGBF, here in Evansville. Some of their programming has a serious hum at times. But, of course, the commercials are hum-free Icon_confused Icon_rolleyes

Yeah...right. Icon_lol

But what I really find annoying about WGBF is how they are constantly preempting The Savage Nation for any form of ball they can find to air. Purdue feetball. Purdue basketball. Ball, schmall. Who gives a rat's behind? Now they won't dare interrupt Hush Limblow or Fawn Vanity...neither of which, by the way, ever has any hum. Guess which program often does have hum...

Well, it isn't just Savage, but also Mark Levin (who I seldom listen to because he is merely a whiny-voiced Savage copycat).

This same station will often go completely silent when a talk show is supposed to be airing, yet still play their local commercials on cue. And other times, they will play commercials over one another.

Yeah, the station is a joke.

I suppose I could get busy, build a wireless broadcaster and feed the audio stream of 910 KNEW into it from my computer...not to mention the audio stream of AM 740...

No music stations you can even pick up at night?

Re: Tis the season...
Sometimes I get AM 740...but as we move into winter, KRMG in Tulsa, OK (also on 740 kc) is once again beginning to interfere with our favorite Toronto station. I had this same problem last winter...but throughout this past summer, KRMG was barely audible at night as AM 740 easily overpowered them...which is what I prefer, anyway.

I generally cannot pick up any other station at night playing music.

Re: Tis the season...
1580 CKDO oldies?
1150 CKOC oldies?
1090 CKKW oldies?

I doubt you'll pic up one of my favorite locals. CKWW 580 Oldies. They're only a 500/w station day & night, with no antenna direction change.

Re: Tis the season...
I'll try those three tomorrow night...

I'm sure I won't be able to receive CKWW at 580. I don't get much here on that end of the band besides the noise of several weak stations "mixing it up" together.

Re: Tis the season...
Have you guys tried building a 2' x 2' loop-antenna yet? I sent some photos of the antenna design to Ron. These antennas allows you to "aim" to pull in & "peak" your favorite AM stations, and "null out" the other Stations on the same freq! Icon_wink

Re: Tis the season...
All of those Canadian stations listed use directional antennas at night ( aimed north, of course ) so picking any of them up at night here in the states is almost impossible. Icon_sad

I even emailed the engineer at CHUM and asked him why. He said there are too many stations on at night on these frequencies in the states that they don't want to interfere with. Icon_sad

If you live close to any of them and can hear them at night, you are lucky.

Re: Tis the season...
Ed, I can hear 1580 on a regular basis quite well at night. I'm just north of Detroit so that may play a factor. To be honest, I never checked their night time signal pattern. Makes sense though given the amount of stations below them. I can usually hear 1150 later at night, 1090 is a hit & miss station.

Re: Reception of certain Canadian stations in the USA
Brian, no doubt your location is to your advantage in being able to pick up the stations you listed.

There is another Canadian music station that I have picked up here before at night, but right now I cannot remember the call letters or frequency. Ed Locker can probably help me out here, he has heard this station also at his location.

Re: Reception of certain Canadian stations in the USA
Ron, there are actually many Canadian music stations on AM. Funny, they never dropped them whole-sale like their US counter parts. But, I once compiled a list of stations in Canada, then proceeded to spend a good long week trying to pull them out. Now, if I could only find the list Icon_confused

Re: Reception of certain Canadian stations in the USA
Our one English-language station in San Juan has those 'timing' problems. There's several call-in talk shows and people are always complaining about it. The reason is obviously a matter of keeping the clocks set so that the commercials and programs will cut in at the prescribed time. A few seconds makes a big difference here!

Some stuff is cued by tones on the program which is more reliable but they are not always on the same audio feed from the satellite as the program material. Our outfit does a lot of 'tape' delaying to fit their schedule (actually not tape these days) and its just like cueing a record...you have to take into account the dead space at the beginning, etc.
