Let's Discuss Religion (was Found today in the local Goodwill)

Re: Let's Discuss Religion (was Found today in the local Goodwil
I think we should consult Garrison Keillor to straighten this out. I often listen to him on the rebroadcast of Prarie Home Companion on AM 820 WNYC on Saturdays - 11:00-1:00 EST in New York on Saturdays. And usually I hear it on a Philco that has been electicricly restored but awaits my mediocre cabinet restoration efforts.

BTW, ever go to a local broadcast of Prarie Home Companion and wonder who all the old folks are? Try a mirror and you'll know.
When I was a little boy, I thought the pastor of my Lutheran Church looked a lot like "God" as depicted in Fantasia. I was scared of him, bigtime. When he came up with us to Boy Scout Camp a few years later, I found out he was a real nice person. No negatives here, thank God. I confess to skipping a few Sunday School sessions and spending the quarter in the little numbered envelope on candy. Other churches in my community had better auditors than mine, and those kids had to attend, at least until the time the collection was taken. Few, I hear, dared to leave the service after that.

Of course it was different to those who were sent, vs. those who were taken to said services. My own son looks like I have two heads when I ask him if he has any religous conviction. He is a pre-med student and the procuct of me, obviously an aging WASP, and Tiawanese Mom. My son has trouble filling out forms about ethnicity. Other!

I'm still wondering what this all has to do about radios. Sure bet we have a real mix of people and opinions on this forum. It would be nice to hear a few more stories, so if you have time, let's hear.

Re: Let's Discuss Religion (was Found today in the local Goodwil
Well, all I gotta say is everyone has a different opinion when it comes to religion. My folks never forced me to go to Church when I was a kid. Thank God for that! I have been "saved" according to my Aunt that visited a few yrs ago, when she helped me in person, accept God into my heart, while holding hands in deep prayer. She & my Uncle have pastored Churches over the yrs, and are members of the Gideons belief, & in their retired yrs, have personally left Bibles in every motel room from S Calif to Ariz. They also agreed with me that it is "ok" just to pray anytime, anywhere, whether or not your under a Church roof or not. God hears you, if he knows you truly believe in him, and ask him to walk beside you everyday, following his simple rules of life the 10 Commandments. That I DO!
I also asked them what they would do if they had a Church move-in nextdoor, asked to hook- up to their waterwell until they could afford to "get on their own feet to pay for their own water service" as per my orig verbal-agreement ( with the pastor) as I did over 9 yrs ago. Since the Pentecoastal Church nextdoor to me using my waterwell connection, has made no-attempt, my Aunt ( who is a pastor also),.. told me to "cap-off" my never ending supply of free water to the Church building next door to me, that buys a new Steeple, buys the pastor a new Caddy, & no attempt to pay for their own water supply! I have the pvc cap, glue, cleaner, & shovel.
Can I get a " halleluyah"!!!!!! Icon_wink

That's the beauty of it - this has nothing to do with radios, but it allows us to see a different "side" of each other, so to speak. Icon_smile

So, as Codefox said, let's hear more stories...

I wasn't sure what kind of response my post would bring. Uffda, if what you said was meant for me, thanks. I'm still in a struggle between the spirit and the flesh. I would like to think my good nature is pretty good. I do know that my bad nature is really bad.

Yes, cap the water and let them get their own. Hallelujah, amen.

Re: Let's Discuss Religion (was Found today in the local Goodwil
Now, I must state here that I am not a deeply religious man. I have never regularly attended church, nor do I intend to in the future.

I have no problem with those who do. Nor do I have problems with churches which are all about preaching the message of God's Love to those who attend within. I'm for it. Many of the tenets boil down to doing good toward your fellow man, and I think most of us here agree that the planet needs all of that we can get.

I do, however, have trouble with the churches that seem to be in business for themselves, that use their pulpits for politics, that have toll-free numbers and television cameras. Somehow I feel like they're missing the point.

God is to be found in our hearts and in the world around us; not our wallets, not our buildings, not our cars or (with a wink at TexasRocker) our neighbor's wells. Icon_wink

Re: Let's Discuss Religion (was Found today in the local Goodwil
Yes, you don't need a building to witness to others, you can witness on a street corner. Certainly many churches have their focus where it doesn't belong. It's very easy to become deceived. There will be false prophets and if it were possible, the very elect will be deceived. Satan, the father of lies, is a slippery one. Just as God has his guardian angels to whom he delegates authority, so does Satan have his own dark "screw-up" angels.

I agree, Randal, cap off your line and let the church next door start being responsible for themselves. No real church is going to sponge off a guy's water supply for 9 years with no attempt to either compensate for same or take responsibility by getting their own water. Keep your focus on God. Ask, WWJD? Would he just take another's water supply? Certainly not. This church next door to you Randal is perpetrating UnGodly behaviour in the name of Christianity. Thery're supposed to be there to serve people, not become parasites. That's the same kind of behaviour I'd expect from any bum. What kind of stewardship is that? They need to get off their blessed assurance and be a light unto the world, not conform to worldly greed and deceit. It's a very sorry example they're setting. This is just totally foul. It amazes me how they even have the nerve to face the same guy they've been scamming for so long. Just give 'em the gate and say "Don't let the doorknob hit ya where the good Lord split ya!" Such crass misbehaviour, it's unbelievable! From such turn away. Turn your eyes and heart toward Him. Love the Lord with all your heart soul and spirit. Love your neighbor as you love yourself. Give the Lord a shout of praise in the house of God! I apologize, but that is indecent and a blatant insult to the name of Chrisitanity.
