Re: I hate winter...and I HATE VECTREN!!!
The break probably did you good. A week of so without rosin fumes and wax condener crud under the fingernails never hurt anyone that I know of. Plus you probably gained a couple of pounds due to proper diet. But I'm just guessing. Glad you're OK.
I still hate winter. |

Re: I hate winter...and I HATE VECTREN!!!
It is good to hear that all is now well. I lived in St. Louis until I was 29, then three years in the DC area before moving to southern california. If I lived in one of those places now, I would have a natural gas-fired generator. Have you considered installing one?
With all fot eh money they spend every year dealing with downed overhead lines, and the eventuial need to replace lines, poles, and transformers, I wonder why more utilities do not simply place the wires and transformer underground? Its all about costs. UG (re)construction is horribly expensive in existing built-up areas. Obtaining new easement rights is almost impossible. And UG lines present a whole new set of problems and restoration is much more time consuming when there IS a problem. |

Re: I hate winter...and I HATE VECTREN!!!
Speaking of Kentucky. The last count on Drudge was 24 poor souls have lost their lives in KY because of the storm. Interesting that they demanded aid for the "victims" of Katrina... I haven't heard much or anything about helping those folks in Kentucky.

Ron Ramirez Wrote:Hi Ed Hi Ron, That's good news. Hope the house didn't suffer. Last I remember of a power failure here, it lasted almost 48hours...during summer time! We had fun with the kids playing social games at night with candles on the kitchen table and listening to my Russian solid state radios (they always have fresh batteries). Now I have a Philips, a Philco and a Heathkit solid state ready to fire in case of "emergency" (all from mid 50ies). The longest power failure we had (in the city I live) lasted about 24 hours during the ice storm of the 90ies. THAT wasn't fun. But some in Québec didn't have power for well over a week I remember. Imagine what would happen if we were at war, without electricity and water all year long...Kinda puts everything into perspective... Syl |

Re: I hate winter...and I HATE VECTREN!!!
Very Glad to hear all is well in your area Ron! My present wife grew up just north of Dayton, Oh,..( Tipp City,Oh) and has told me several stories about elec pwr ice-storm blackouts in the past! There is a trade-off though! Its really pretty up there in the midwest during summer & fall!! We love going to Ohio area in the summer!! I got stranded in Goshen,Oh once when married to my 1st wife while visiting over Christmas holidays by her suggestion with my "then" current-inlaws! When I went to sleep, it was snowing abit, when I woke up, there was snow 2' up on the outside of my window pane next to my bed!Glad they had a basement with a pool-table in it!! As we say in Texas,... "whoa pardner"!! I helped my exes dad shovel-snow out of the driveway all day, the next day was better. We made it back to the Airport in Cinci somehow ,I got my Tx-butt on the plane, and kissed the ground at DFW airport when we landed!Aint been back in those "parts" except during the summer season since. However, I could adapt easily if I lived there year-round!! We LOVE the Midwest States indeed!! I highly enjoyed the mid-summer fishing-trips with my ex-father inlaw on Bullock Pen Lake, just S of Cinci area in northern Ky! We always passed thru a small Ky town that had a water-tower that had the towns City motto on it" " Welcome to Florence Ya'LL !! Sorry, didnt mean to reminise here!My current wife & I truly love the midwest indeed!! Springtime is just around the corner!! Stay warm Ya'LL!! Randal

Re: I hate winter...and I HATE VECTREN!!!
Guys, thanks; the house does not seem to be any the worse for wear, thankfully! No busted water pipes, no leaks in the roof. Oh, my neighbor informed me yesterday that one of the gutters on the side of my garage was falling off, weighted down with ice. I looked...sure enough, he was right. But if that's all that happened out of all this icy mess we have had...I can't complain.
And Randal, I have passed that water tank with "FLORENCE Y'ALL" painted on it many times on trips to/through Cincinnati. -- Ron Ramirez Ferdinand, IN |

Re: I hate winter...and I HATE VECTREN!!!
Very glad to hear your back home again, and no broken waterpipes! Yeah Ron, If we ever move further-north, "Florence Ya'LL" looks like my kinda community indeed! Not far from "big bone lick State Park",Ky... I kidd my wife about that deal!,.. and good fishing lakes are plentiful!Visiting north of Cinci a few yrs back, she & her sister got to see the orig WLW transmitter site "orig interiors & equip" in Mason, Oh.. The new WLW engineer & his family were still living at the orig WLW Powell Crosley Tower site & ( newer transmitters also installed in same building) location, main gate was open, so they drove into the WLW grounds. The WLW engineer gave them a free-tour of the orig all tube 50KW WLW, to see all the vintage equip! He even sent me a orig ceramic( vintage n.o.s. never used) 250k 10-watt wirewound resistor as a WLW momento to keep here with our vintage tube radio collection. Those WLW folks are very nice folks indeed!Just like all our Pfilco Pfiends here on these forums!! Springs just around the corner, & fixing that broken rain gutter will be a breeze!Stay warm northern friends!!

Re: I hate winter...and I HATE VECTREN!!!
Just thought you guys would like to know a little trivia about the water tower in Florence, Ky. Years ago when they erected the tower, the locals painted "FLORENCE MALL" on the side of the tower for the huge mall located beside the tower. Well of course it didn't meet zoning requirements and the state didn't like it by the expressway so they comprimised by painting out part of the M and adding apostrophe to creat "FLORENCE Y'ALL". Then it was not considered a sign for the mall so it appeased the bureacrats and it's still there!

Re: I hate winter...and I HATE VECTREN!!!
Ron: Never had lost power during any winter since I bought my house in 75, until "THE STORM". We were without power for 8 days, finally getting power back on Tuesday 2-8 at 430pm. While I am glade we are getting back to some sense of normal, lots of folks still without power here in Ohio County and surrounding counties. Glade all is ok with you.
