Philco Radio Speaker Model 1?23
#1

I volunteer at our local hospice charity shop testing, evaluating and repairing if sensible donated electronics. There's a lot of mundane stuff, lifted by moderate excitement from 60's & early 70's vintage audio, some of which when refurbished raises a lot more money for our hospice than the typical 90's Sony receiver.

Yesterday I found in my queue something that looked like a side table with a drawer at first glance, then I saw a speaker peering out of a grill in the front and a wire with a pair of spade connectors emerging from a hole in the back.

No electronics

And a label saying it was a Philco Radio Speaker Model 1 (0, 6 or 8) 23.

The speaker cone is in good condition and it sounds OK with modest level input.

I've been through the product index here, but can't find this model. Is it part of a model with the electronics in a separate housing that sat on the table?

Can someone please help me identify what I have and hence value it.

I've asked someone to shoot me a photo and will add when I receive it.

Thank you in anticipation.

Welcome to the Phorum!

One possibility that leaps to mind is this guy (especially since you heard some sound without any other power):

That's just a total guess though. A photo will be a big help.

That's an extremely good guess!

Thank you.

As in the other specialist audio forums I'm a member of, I know dealing is not allowed and I'm not trying to sell here. However I would appreciate some guidance on value and how sell this to maximize the benefit for our local hospice. I've a lot of experience of selling much younger vintage audio and know I'm out of my area of expertise here.

Actually you're welcome to sell here on the Phorum in the 'For Sale or Trade' board:

Be sure to read the rules before posting, but no reason you can't offer it for sale to other Phorum members.

According to the Gallery production info there were ~20,000 made. That's a decent number produced - but from what I've seen they don't come up all that often. It's from Philco's first year of producing radios (1928) so that's neat in and of itself.

Really it comes down to condition (photos would be great) and finding the right buyer. If you're willing / able to safely ship it that would definitely open it up to a broader audience. Selling on eBay would probably yield a bit higher sale price (again, if you can ship it) - but eBay takes a pretty big chunk of that in fees (8-15% I think).

Depending on those factors I'd guess $25 (really poor condition) - $125 (really nice condition).
But ask somebody else and you'll almost certainly get a different answer. Icon_smile

The fact that it seems to work is definitely in your favor. I'm looking forward to seeing some photos when you've had a chance. It's a cool bit of Philco history!

I went in this morning and got a photo, attached. I also decided to have a peer inside as the wire emerging from the back looked a little newer that 1929. The speaker is one of Radio Shack's finest from the 60's or 70's I guess.

There are some minor scuffs on the top, otherwise very good

We are thinking of trying to sell this locally via CL.

I do appreciate all the help given that I've just appeared here.

A shame the original speaker isn't there. The cabinet looks to be in good shape though. Craigslist isn't a bad option - I always keep an eye out there locally. Plus no need to deal with shipping. Icon_thumbup
