Need guidance in selecting a Lowboy
#16

I think that I would hold off for something a little closer then Pennsylvania, those 1929 Philcos in the lowboy cabinet seem to turn up everywhere at some point. The one Willy has has been messed with, I would sooner get one that still has a worn out original finish then a stain n' polyed blunder like that.

Thx Arran, I was kinda leaning in that direction. Unfortunately, I'm far less a wood worker than in restoring electronics, but of course would rather have something that looks un-tampered with. If they messed with the cabinet, who knows what they might have done to the circuitry.

I've bought two consoles from Willy in the past. He could give a class on how to pack and ship, and his rate is fair, currently $90.

I passed on Willeez offering, and have recently been in contact with the eBayer offering the one I had displayed earlier in the thread;

Since the seller is acting like he doesn't know jack about these, I asked him to send me scans of the back;

It appears to have original parts, but he told me that it only has 6 tubes, which seems to be apparent from the scans.

What model would this be, and would it be a decent performer AFA sensitivity and audio quality for a TRF?

Looks to be a model 87 but is missing the two 45 output tubes. Performance is good and is a good sounding set for 1929 technology. Here's a good pic of an 87, the output tubes are up in the right front corner.

Thanks! OK, so given the scans, what should I offer him for it, (plus of course shipping) ?

I'd go $50-75. If you need some bargaining chips the missing 45's and if your close enough the see it in person check the spkr plug (all 4 pin should have some resistance to each other). If not then you may be looking at another $50 for a replacement. The cabinet looks a little dull not sure if it's been stripped or not. Color looks pretty good.

He's had a BIN going since November; 8 consoles for $500, or $62.50 each, so that's what I offered him for it, after pointing out the need for two 45 tubes and posting an eBay link displaying one shoulder tube offered for $40, and another with two for $75.
I also explained about possibly needing another speaker plug if the pins on his don't show resistance to each other, at a cost of up to $50.

Stay tooned... ;)

He got back to me and said that he was selling 8 consoles, not one. Good luck with that. I told him my offer stands unless/until I find another.

BTW, if anyone has one of these consoles they could part with, I'd be interested, obviously.
