KDKA AM 1020 Pittsburgh turns 90 years on 11-2-10
Pioneer radio station KDKA AM 1020 will enter its 90th year in commercial broadcasting on November 2, 2010. Long considered the first commercially licensed broadcasting station in the world, KDKA has always been and is still the #1 station in the Pittsburgh radio market. With its powerful 50,000 watt non-directional clear-channel signal, at night it can received and heard in 34 states and half of Canada. For an informative history lesson, you can also listen in full to 3 of their anniversary shows on the KDKA-AM.com website. It really shows how important radio was informing the public on the important news of the day, and how entertaining radio was to the whole family before the advent of TV. Listen to the 90th anniversary show on 11-2 , it should be quite entertaining. Pittsburgh still has the unique distinction of having two of the three radio stations East of the Mississippi River that have continuously used, since the early 1920's, the K prefix in their call letters. KDKA-AM 1020 and KQV-AM 1410. KQV is a 5000 watt local station but has a great website where you can hear "Radio Spirits" old time radio shows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. It may even be three stations if you include 93.7 KDKA-FM which started using that call last April. The other station being KYW in Philly.
