Apollo 11 New York Times newspaper
Hello everyone,
I just wanted to brag about my find earlier today. I was at one of the nearby antique stores to look around and see if they had any radios I could plan on obtaining for a future project. Aside from a really nice Zenith floor unit that, according to the tag, "hummed when turned on, but other than that everything works," I found an original New York Times newspaper from July 21, 1969 with the headline, "Men on the Moon!" It's the original New York Moon landing newspaper! And they only wanted $10.00 for it! TEN bucks! How can I pass that up? I grew up as a huge fanatic of space and astronomy, so this was like revisiting the wonder of my childhood (which, I know, was slightly more recent than many of you ;)). I bought it and immediately took it to the frame store to get it framed. Two weeks from now I'll have an awesome picture to put in my office for all the Midshipmen to read. I'm really excited and just wanted to share my good fortune with others. And yes, to be clear, the newspaper is about twice my age! It's just a super cool piece of history, like the radios here. Hope everyone else is having a great weekend! -Brandon |

Re: Apollo 11 New York Times newspaper
That's good, Brandon.
I went through some antique stores on Friday, and in one I found a Bee Gees songbook with the words and music to the songs on their album Idea. Now, before you start having bad thoughts of disco and Saturday Night Fever, this was from 1968, before disco was even thought of - and when there were five very young Bee Gees; the three Gibb brothers plus two guys from Australia (Vince Melouney and Colin Petersen). Paid $5 for it. I've never seen anything like it before. It goes right along with the original 1968 Atco LP Idea that I have; the cover of the songbook even matches the LP cover art. -- Ron Ramirez Ferdinand, IN |

Re: Apollo 11 New York Times newspaper
Good music from the pre disco Bee Gees! Did THAT bring back some memories. I also liked Bobby Goldsboro and Jose Feliciano from that period. Two more that you never hear about any more.....
Brandon- super find. The astronauts were indeed a BIG deal when I was a kid. I remember being close to tears when the news about the Apollo 1 capsule fire that killed Gus Grissom, Roger Chaffee and Edward White was broadcast. I also remember all the kids in the neighborhood stayed at a neighbor's house to watch the first moon landing/walk. (Although I must admit that where I am from there are more people who think that the moonwalk was faked and that professional wrestling (rasslin') is real). I also remember the pride we had in the exploits of the X-15 and the then-super secret SR 71 spy plane. Up until the end of it's career the SR 71 routinely overflew soviet controlled territory and was immune to interception due to it's high (mach 3.2-plus) cruising speed and ultra high (85,000 plus feet) altitude that it operated at. We were also proud of a newly created unit of highly trained and motivated youn men called the Army Special Forces, and how every kid knew the words to Sgt Barry Sadler's song "Ballad of the Green Berets." |

Re: Apollo 11 New York Times newspaper
HAHA TA,
My dad ALWAYS sings "Ballad of the Green Berets!" He used to sing it to me when I was a a little kid and I for the longest time I thought he'd made it up. Then I found his old records and there it was, on vinyl! It's funny to think my dad was a kid (well, actually a teen) when the moon landing happened. That must've been amazing to watch. Even if the picture quality wasn't quite HD. Too bad we haven't gone back and established a colony or something. Oh well, in the proposed 2012 federal budget on whitehouse.GOV (not whitehouse.COM 'cause that's an adult site) the NASA budget claims they're planning on funding a manned mission to an asteroid in 10 years... just like the 3 manned missions to Mars that were supposed to have occurred before 2010 and the lunar colony by 2020... hmm... I guess we'll see. Maybe we need another good cold war. Gotta admit, fear motivates like no other Good night all, -Brandon |

Re: Apollo 11 New York Times newspaper
Thats a great find.
I found recently a local AZ paper from the Apollo 11 landing at my parents house. I havent had a chance to do anything with it yet. Your idea of getting it framed sounds like a good one. I also have a paper from when Kennedy was assinated(sp). -Keith

Re: Apollo 11 New York Times newspaper
Coincidentally, I just picked up a first 1970 hardcover edition of "First On The Moon", by Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins.
Still has the dust jacket . $6 at an antique store we frequent occasionally. The ones you usually find now are a later 2002 edition with a color photo on jacket. Chuck Chuck Schwark, The Philco Repair Bench ![]() http://www.philcorepairbench.com |
