Philco in Hollywood
Friends and I always used to trade info of movies using some of the things we collect and using them as props. While watching a movie recently on TCM I caught "Topper Takes a Trip" from 1939. There is a scene where the main character Cosmos Topper walks into a bar with the lady ghost and instead of jukebox that was typical of a bar, there standing against the wall is a nice new Philco 39-116. On the bar top near a telephone is the Mystery Control Box for it. He dials the Mystery Control and the Philco comes to life. He tries to dial again and the music changes. What a great publicity piece for Philco and Mystery Control. I was looking through other movies I have and found some interesting movies with Philcos featured in them.
"The Big Broadcast of 1932" featuring Bing Crosby and Burns & Allen has a very rare Philco 23X radio-phonograph in the early part of the movie.
One of my favorites is "State Of The Union" with Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn from 1948 about a presidential election. Every electronic product in their house is a new 1948 Philco from bakelite table radios to a large pushbutton 48-482, a large radio phonograph with 6L6 output tubes 48-1276, and even a Philco 48-2500 projection TV set which is airing the presidential returns until one of the actors closes the lid, shutting the set off.
Another movie I have to look closer at is "Some Came Running" With Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin from 1958. I recall a Philco 37-650PX radio-phonograph in the living room, a set I know very well. The dial sits a little lower than the regular model and there is a little wooden projection on the front lid edge for lifting the lid of the phonograph part. The photo on Ron's website is my 37-650PX, taken at an AWA meet in 1998 about 2 hours after I bought the set. I remember that trip well as my very new 1998 Windstar van blew it's transmission outside of Binghamton, NY on the way home and had to be towed back to Philadelphia.
What other movies featuring Philcos do you know of?

I saw that one too. Finally got to see one in action, albeit from a vintage movie. I always wanted to see what my repro batteries went into.... Icon_smile

I think there's an early Philco portable in The Philadelphia Story. Jimmy Stewart and Katharine Hepburn are talking by a swimming pool, and the set is playing in the background. Can't tell you the exact model, but it is one of those sets with the Tenite escutcheon.
