Photos from the Lexington, KY Swap Meet 10-29-11
We had a good turnout and it was nice meeting a lot of new faces.

Below are a few pictures I took, but it appears my skills still need some fine tuning. As mentioned in an earlier post we had a member bring almost 70 beautiful Catalin and Bakelite radios:

Some of the Catalin and Bakelite sets:

An A.K. 627 and an Emerson 45; the A.K. found a new home:

While a bit chilly in the morning, it warmed up and some decided to set-up outside:

Julie and Marty were kept busy supplying knobs, escutcheons, and misc. parts:

Re: Lexington, KY Swap Meet 10-29-2011 (updated with picture
Thanks for posting the pictures, John! Icon_thumbup They are fine.

Another nice meet. I actually brought a few things along this time, and only had to take one radio back home with me. I also took home a very nice Philco 50 cathedral.

John, I'm sort of glad someone bought that AK 627 cathedral, because it was really tempting me! Very cool design, I really liked it.

I also picked up the knobs I needed for my 37-650B project from Julie & Marty.

It was great to see all of our friends again, to have a chance to hang out and talk.

Joe, Cheri, Debbie and myself later had lunch at the Meadowthorpe Cafe. Excellent. (John, unfortunately, Hattie's was closed.) After lunch, we went into an antique mall not far from the cafe, where I found an Aladdin Amber Beehive lamp at a very reasonable price.

I took a few photos at the meet also, will post them later. I moved this portion of the original topic into the Bar & Grill to keep the photos - and the thread - from disappearing, as I have swap meet announcements set to automatically delete themselves after 45 days. This way, we can preserve the memories. Icon_smile

Great Pictures John,

It was great to meet you and see everyone at the meet yesterday. My Brother-in-law and I had a good time and came home with a Philco 54 too. I'll post a picture as soon as I can.

I know what you mean about the AK too Ron, it is a real "eye-catcher".

Seeing all the catalins was pretty great too, just a bit out of my price range though, Icon_sad .

More photos:

Here are some of those great looking Catalin sets.

More Catalin and plastic sets:

Here's Joe Vittitow on the left and John (Eliot) on the right. I didn't get the gentleman's name in the middle.

Marty and Julie are busy helping Dave Allen with some knobs:

A few of the ladies took time to chat while the swapping was going on:

My table. Yes, I brought some things to sell, and I'm happy to report that I only had to take the metal box AK and some of the small items back home with me:

The action was going on outside as well as inside. Once the sun came up and began to warm things a bit, it turned out to be a rather pleasant day:

Our good friend Terry Layman looking over things:

Lexington-area collector Tom Hunt had these items for sale:

After the meet, I bought this Philco 50 cathedral from Terry:

Good times, good radios. Glenn, it was nice to meet your brother-in-law. What did he think of everything?

Those are some very nice photos. I always end up drooling at the radios I see pictured at those meets and I think I need to go to one of those someday. Icon_biggrin

No matter where you go, there you are.

Ron,

He liked the meet, I think more than he's leading on..haha. He's staying an extra day and he wants to spend some time working on the 118 on the bench... Icon_thumbup

I tried posting a picture of the 54, however "board quota has been reached" even after resizing it down. Icon_sad

Was Terry the person selling the consoles?

Yes.

Send a picture of the 54 to me, I'll resize it and post it.

Ahh, so that's where Tom's model 54 went; nice snag Glenn!

Yes, there were some beautiful Catalin sets, and that was the largest collection I've seen at one meet, it was almost like having a museum on site. I think my favorite was the green Addison:

Nice model 50 Ron; I like (what I consider) the clean and simple design. I have a model 51 that needs some restoration, but I like the similar styles. Mine is a bit rough and missing the speaker, escutcheon, and rear arch support. I do have the front leg somewhere that a friend sent to me years ago and the chassis is remarkably clean and rust free. I think I bought this BRB (before Ron's book :winkIcon_smile after being told it was a super rare set.

A nice side story on the meet involves Ron and a young 13 year old boy. The young man was both thrilled and overwhelmed to see all these radios...... in his own words the experience was "Epic." Ron gave the young boy a nice AM/FM wood set and he then learned his first lesson from Radiopup on knob selection and left with a radio, knobs, and with a teacher showing him some electronics Ron may have recruited a new collector. Good job Ron!

Re: Photos from the Lexington, KY Swap Meet 10-29-11
Well, I for one would like to see more young people get involved in this hobby, rather than them taking restorable console radios, ripping out the chassis, cutting a big hole in the front panel and making touch-screen Ipod-thingies out of them. Icon_evil

And seeing this boy and his enthusiasm at seeing all of the radios, reminded me of how I got started in this hobby when I was 14 years old, reading the "Antique Radio Corner" columns written by the late Jim Fred in the old Elementary Electronics magazine.

John, that Philco 51 definitely has a lot of potential. Icon_thumbup

Ron,

Icon_thumbup Icon_thumbup Icon_thumbup He must've come around after we departed. No good deed goes unrewarded. I hope we see some posts from this young man when he gets started.
