What's y'all's opinion?
I'm planning on doing a tribute to my grandparents and am looking for a place to start. I want to restore a radio made in 1941 (the year that they were married). I want a console that would have been a higher end radio for it's day, is a good performer and won't break the bank. What model(s) would y'all suggest? Any major brand is fine.
Thanks, Dave |

RE: What's y'all's opinion?
Hi Dave
How about that Zenith you got? It's a pretty good set. I fixed up one for a customer awhile back good sounding set but it does have that cursed rubber wire! It's a '40 or 41 model. Terry |

RE: What's y'all's opinion?
That is cetainly an option if I can't find something else. The 8S463 was built from 1939 to 1940, just a little shy of the 1941 goal that I'm searching for. I also wouldn't mind a higher tube count (although that does not always means better performance).

RE: What's y'all's opinion?
If you don't mind a challenge, perhaps a 1941 Philco 41-280 would be what you want. They may be found just about anywhere, and they usually aren't expensive. Caveat: These are full of rubber-covered wires, and this model and its siblings are particularly challenging due to the sheer number of wires connected to numerous terminals on the set's band switch.

Where are you located? Perhaps someone nearby has something.

Macon, GA. I'm checking CL & am going to talk to my fellow SARS members. I'm just starting my search and am in no rush. Thanks for y'alls help.

RE: What's y'all's opinion?
Ron's suggestion of a 41-280 gets my vote too. I was lucky enough to find one that didn't need anything done to the cabinet. The chassis was another story...
It's a very attractive set - and my wife likes it too! Bill Sent from my Pentium II on the AT&T Dial Network |
