Hi. thanks very much for asking. Yes, all is O.K. here; we live in the near North Side of Evansville, a few miles away from the tornado path. It skirted the extreme southeast edge of Evansville, actually only passed along the southeastern edge of the trailer park. As terrible as the tragedy was, had the tornado passed just a little further north, there would have been a LOT more loss of lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost loved ones in this unusual November storm.
Early Sunday morning, just before 2 a.m., the tornado started on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River, crossed the river, strengthened, took out the Ellis Park horse racing track then hit the trailer park before moving into neighboring Newburgh and causing a lot of damage - but, miraculously, no loss of life in Newburgh. It then moved on northeast and caused at least four fatalities in the small town of Degonia Springs before finally falling apart. We were extremely fortunate. This storm even caught the National Weather Service off guard; we slept right through it, not realizing anything had happened until one of MRS. R.'s brothers called and woke us up shortly before 7 to ask if we were okay; he had seen reports on CNN about the storm. It was quite a shock to wake up to hear that a tornado had passed through! My oldest daughter had tried to call us around 2 a.m. during the storm, but we were sound asleep and did not hear the phone ringing. Yes...we were VERY fortunate. It is rather unusual to have this type of storm in November, but it is not unheard of; this has happened before in this area. In fact, only a couple of years ago, a tornado ripped through Newburgh, and caused a lot of damage. And it happened in December. -- Ron Ramirez Ferdinand, IN |

Hi Ron,
Great to see this site, AND that you and your family are OK. Prayers go out to those who lost loved ones, and those who need assistance. OK, I got to get back and start reading these great past threads here. Take care, Gary Rabbitt

My sincere thanks to everyone who called, e-mailed, etc. after our tornado of November 6.
Here we go again...as I type this, we have had one severe storm after another in my area, all day long. These storms have spawned at least two tornadoes so far in our area...with another line of storms moving in from the west just ahead of a cold front that is going to dramatically lower temperatures here, bringing our Indian Summer to an end. Temperatures have risen into the low 70s, which did allow me to spray two more Philco cabinets out in the garage in between storm warnings. But I've had to spend a lot of the day down here in the basement, watching the storm coverage on the television. -- Ron Ramirez Ferdinand, IN |

Weather
In this time of 1952, I spent a couple of months in that area. To be exact, it was in a little encampment near Morganfield, Kentucky: Camp Breckinridge. I learned the meaning of: Kentucky windage. It was the windiest damned place i can remember. When the snow finally hit, the wind made it pretty unbearable. Of coiurse, I'm not an outdoors type.
I used to get into Evansville every weekend, and enjoy the town. It was a great escape from GI buildings. I got to appreciate brick buildings immensely in those days. I bought my RCA 45EY4 record player from Harding and Miller Music Co. in Evansville when I first got there. Anyhow, it's good to know that Ron is O.K. through all of this. |

My father met my mother during World War II when he was stationed at Camp Breckinridge. Small world. The former camp has been a Job Corps center for many years now.
Never heard of Harding and Miller. But then I've only lived in Evansville for a couple years, although I've been driving around Evansville since I was a teenager (mid-late 1970s). -- Ron Ramirez Ferdinand, IN |
