Philco into Barcode technology?

I was searching for information on how to read a bar code because a vendor we have is very unhelpful, and I accidentally stumbled upon the history of the barcode, how Philco bought the patent (and later sold it to Sylvania)

I'm very curious why Philco was interested in this technology.
I do know they had the beam of light phonos in the early 40's (light in on/off fashion used to reproduce sound)...wonder if they were going to print a record in barcode fashion to read? LOL
