I am helping a friend with his Philco 41-221. It has been recapped by a previous repairman. The radio frequency on the dial is way off. Where is the adjustment for changing the oscillator frequency so that it agrees with the dial pointer.

Also, at the very high end of the dial there is oscillation or motorgboating. The electrolytic capacitors and paper capacitors have been changed.

The pins on the loctal tubes have a dark coating on them. Is there something that I can clean the tube sockets and pins so that they are clean?

Thank you for your suggestions.

Well

I am still taking a breather after 38-15, but tonight I was bored out of my mind and the choice came down to:
1. Rummage through the fridge
2. Have a 250 calories worth of an Irish ale, or
3. Start on the tube checking.

I chose the latter.
Now the very first tube, the 5U4, of course, what else, it sticking as a you know what naturally I picked it first, it tests DEAD. And dead means - reeeely dead. No movimento absolutamente. None.
At tbe same time it gets hot and the filament really drags down the Line indicator. Which I figure is probably OK. But no emission, whatsoever? On BOTH diodes? Weird I say.

Anyone seen'em like this, heating and full dead? (I did check for shorts, it is good).

There is another tube 6J5 that is bad, but it is "mostly dead" being 150 at some 1500 or such.
And even 6A5 output tubes are probably ok at 1500 with 3000 nominal. Both are the same.

I have another few tubes to go through; the thing is dirty as heck and one tube had pins oxydized though tested fine. And the extraction is a bit difficult.

Well as we say, "a woman had no worries so she bought herself a piglet".

Gonna be fun!

Hello everyone. Picked up a couple of radios recently, not that I was looking for them, but they just sorta fell into my lap. One is an Emerson DJ-312 ac/dc portable in relatively good condition. The other is something of a mystery. The only marking I can find on it is an orange label on the back that states " Plant A Chicago, USA no. 225410." The cabinet looks a little like a Philco 'bullet' radio and is in very restorable condition. Can anyone shed some light on this second radio? It has a label under the cabinet that says Model 215, but most of the label is missing. It's a BC/SW receiver, and doesn't look like much to work on it. Tubes are 6A7, 6D6, 76, 25Z5, 43, and a K49C ballast tube. Any info anyone can offer is greatly appreciated. Take care. Gary

Anyone care to give me advice on removing the sub-shassis on this one?
Is it just as bad as the 38-116?
Is this radio worth all the work involved in restoring the chassis?
Thanks
Why woud they do both in the same year?

The story that I read about why most British sets used a low tube/valve count had more to do with customer demand. The British Valve Association was a patent pool/cartel among the tube manufacturers like Brimar and Mullard in old blighty and had nothing to do with the government.
According to an article I read in a Radio Craft magazine from around 1946-47 explaining the design of British sets the BVA would sell tubes to the radio manufacturers at almost a loss leader price and then take their pound of flesh when the owner of the set needed the tubes replaced. Sometimes the markup would be several times what the radio manufacturer had to pay, so the inclination of most customers was to buy sets with no more then five tubes. There was also the retail price of the set that one had to take into consideration as well as what they called the purchase tax which was close to 30% at the time. Fewer tubes meant a lower retail price and of course a lower net price.
The exception to this was the British divisions of American radio manufacturers. Kolster-Brandes, Philco, and some smaller start up manufacturers predominantly used American RMA style tubes, not BVA style tubes. American surplus tubes flooded the market over there and were substantially cheaper then the indigenous types, so many of the smaller companies, and the rental radios, used those.

I'm a newcomer to this list.

I've begun restoration starting with re-caping all but 3 that were not easily reached. Brought up power slowly with a variac and it lives! Volume seems a bit low but I'll get to that.

There is no glass dial scale. I found a good jpg of a scale on the web and laser printed it to transparecy paper. Cut a new plate from plexiglass rather than glass. Also have new white backing to attached to side clips. My question is simple. Can someone explain or send me a picture of what goes where. I'm primarily not sure where the glass goes. Also the gold exterior plate that covers everything has in addition to the 3 small screws 2 larger screws on end end of the plate. They are missing and I have no idea what they were for.

This is an historically interesting radio in that it came from Mr. Gimble's office of the famous Gimbles department store in downtown Phailadelphia.
Thanks for any help out there.
