Reproduction Philco Cabinets

Custom-Built by Steve Davis

The Edward L. Combs Collection

Edward L. Combs (1906-1941) was hired by Philco to design many of the cabinets used in Philco's 1929 model lineup. He continued to design cabinets for Philco into the mid-1930s, although his work was used less and less after 1932.

His most famous cabinets are the Model 70 Baby Grand and the Model 90 Baby Grand sets. The Model 70 Baby Grand was originally introduced in early 1931 as Model 21. A 110 volt DC version, Model 46, followed in March 1931. Models 70 and 35 became available in May-June 1931, along with the slightly larger Model 90.

The Clyde Shuler Collection

Clyde F. Shuler (1892-1969) was an industrial designer as well as a design educator. Among radio collectors, he is best known for the design of the cathedral radio cabinets which housed Models 36B, 43B, 47B, 52B, 71B and 91B. The same style would be used by Philco in all of its "Baby Grand" (cathedral) cabinets through December 1933, and on many cathedral models up to May 1934.

Condenser Block Restuffing Tools

If you do restorations on early Philco radios, you need this set of Philco service tools. The set includes a 1/4 inch plastic nut driver for aligning Philco radios that have trimmer capacitors with a 1/4 inch nut. The nonmetallic tool will not detune the RF and IF circuits or short out the B+. The large handle makes it easy to precisely adjust trimmers. This tool is hands down, the best Philco alignment tool you can buy! Also included are a set of tools for restuffing bakelite condenser blocks. This set includes a wire cutting tool and a punching tool for pushing the insides out of the bakelite blocks.

Here is how to use the condenser block tools: In most cases, there is no need to disconnect the wires from the block. While the block is still bolted to the chassis, use the cutter tool to cut the wires where they pass through the rivets. One twist on each rivet will quickly and cleanly cut the wires. While the block is still bolted to the chassis, use your heat gun to heat the block. Try to concentrate the heat on the sides of the block. Use the push tool to push the old condenser out as far as the chassis will allow (the block is still bolted to the chassis). Remove the screw and roll the block. Then using the push tool, push the old condenser the rest of the way out of the block. Once the old capacitor has been removed, clean solder from the terminals and install a new capacitor. That's it! These tools will make a dreaded job, a job you will look forward to.........well, almost!

The alignment tool is also available separately, as are the two condenser block restuffing tools.
