Philco for 1928 (introduced June 1928)<\/h2>\n

<\/span>Overview<\/span><\/h3>\n

This marked the bat\u00adtery and \"Sock\u00adet-Pow\u00ader\" company's entry into the radio man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ading busi\u00adness. They aimed to \"make a splash\" by offer\u00ading a num\u00adber of table mod\u00adel sets in dif\u00adfer\u00adent col\u00adors, as well as a few con\u00adsole models.<\/p>\n

Col\u00adlec\u00adtive\u00adly, this ear\u00adly line of Philco mod\u00adels are known as the \"511 series\" since all of the sets below used the same 7-tube TRF<\/span> chas\u00adsis, which per\u00adformed quite well. All were designed to oper\u00adate on 105-115 volt, 60 cycle AC<\/span>: ver\u00adsions made to run on 25 cycle AC<\/span> were also avail\u00adable. All had pow\u00ader sup\u00adplies built as part of the main chas\u00adsis, unlike most of their com\u00adpeti\u00adtors which were still using large, sep\u00ada\u00adrate pow\u00ader supplies.<\/p>\n

Of course, these sets received only the AM<\/span> band, and not the entire AM<\/span> band as we know it today. These Philcos were designed to receive between 550 and 1500 kc, which was the entire AM<\/span> (stan\u00addard broad\u00adcast) band as it exist\u00aded then.<\/p>\n

The weak points of these new Philcos were the high-imped\u00adance mag\u00adnet\u00adic speak\u00aders used, which by 1928 were already becom\u00ading obsolete.<\/p>\n

The orig\u00adi\u00adnal sell\u00ading prices of the radio below did not include tubes, or (in the case of the met\u00adal table mod\u00adels) speakers.<\/p>\n

Philco would fin\u00adish the year in 26th place in the radio indus\u00adtry, not bad con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00ading their radios had only been on the mar\u00adket dur\u00ading the lat\u00adter half of 1928.<\/p>\n

Mod\u00adel 511, the basic entry-lev\u00adel Philco, came in a \"Span\u00adish Brown\" col\u00ador scheme. The match\u00ading Mod\u00adel 211 speak\u00ader (sold sep\u00ada\u00adrate\u00adly) was paint\u00aded to match the radio.<\/p>\n

The cab\u00adi\u00adnets of all of the table mod\u00adels, and the speak\u00ader hous\u00adings, were made of stamped metal.<\/p>\n

A ver\u00adsion of Mod\u00adel 511 made to oper\u00adate on 25 to 40 cycle AC<\/span> cur\u00adrent was Mod\u00adel 521. It is oth\u00ader\u00adwise iden\u00adti\u00adcal to Mod\u00adel 511.<\/p>\n

Mod\u00adel 512 was the Man\u00addarin Red mod\u00adel with a Chi\u00adnese-type flower motif and a bird paint\u00aded on the lid.<\/p>\n

The match\u00ading Mod\u00adel 212 speak\u00ader could be pur\u00adchased separately.<\/p>\n

The 25-40 cycle AC<\/span> ver\u00adsion of this set was Mod\u00adel 522.<\/p>\n

Mod\u00adel 515, the Impres\u00adsion\u00adis\u00adtic, is the rarest of the 511 series of table mod\u00adel radios. The Mod\u00adel 215 speak\u00ader was avail\u00adable to match this radio.<\/p>\n

The 25 to 40 cycle AC<\/span> ver\u00adsion of this mod\u00adel was Mod\u00adel 525.<\/p>\n

Note that the radio shown is a repro\u00adduc\u00adtion of a 515, and is not an orig\u00adi\u00adnal set. Orig\u00adi\u00adnal 515 sets have the lotus leaf design on the sides and back as well as on the front.<\/p>\n

Philco announced a radio-phono\u00adgraph com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adtion in its 1928 deal\u00ader cat\u00ada\u00adlog. Mod\u00adel 571 would have com\u00adbined a 511 series chas\u00adsis with a sin\u00adgle play 78 rpm phonograph.<\/p>\n

It appears, how\u00adev\u00ader, that this mod\u00adel was nev\u00ader put into pro\u00adduc\u00adtion. None are known to exist, and there are no records of its being produced.<\/p>\n

Two years would pass before Philco would again offer a radio-phono\u00adgraph com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adtion - a mod\u00adel that did make it to pro\u00adduc\u00adtion. (See the June 1930 line\u00adup for details.)<\/p>\n
