Philco for 1931 (introduced June 1931)<\/h2>\n

<\/span>Overview<\/span><\/h3>\n

The Philco line was great\u00adly expand\u00aded for 1931-32 and now includ\u00aded two bat\u00adtery mod\u00adels, two DC-only mod\u00adels, and quite a few AC<\/span> mod\u00adels from 7 to 11 tubes includ\u00ading two radio-phono\u00adgraphs and even a chair\u00adside model.<\/p>\n

Ini\u00adtial\u00adly, all of the new Philco mod\u00adels were super\u00adhetero\u00addynes except for the TRF<\/span> Mod\u00adel 46, which was a DC-only set. (Inci\u00adden\u00adtal\u00adly, the 46 Baby Grand was the only mod\u00adel car\u00adried over from March 1931.)<\/p>\n

Four new Philco cab\u00adi\u00adnets (112 low\u00adboy, 112 high\u00adboy, 212 radio-phono\u00adgraph, and 370 Lazy\u00adboy) were designed by the famous indus\u00adtri\u00adal design\u00ader, Nor\u00adman Bel Ged\u00addes. These cab\u00adi\u00adnets car\u00adried a spe\u00adcial decal inside with a styl\u00adized NBG<\/span> on the left side, and which stat\u00aded, \"This cab\u00adi\u00adnet designed by Nor\u00adman Bel Geddes.\"<\/p>\n

The fol\u00adlow\u00ading March 1931 mod\u00adel remained in the Philco line\u00adup: 46 Baby Grand. All oth\u00ader Jan\u00adu\u00adary-March 1931 mod\u00adels were discontinued.<\/p>\n

Designed for oper\u00ada\u00adtion where AC<\/span> or DC<\/span> cur\u00adrent was not avail\u00adable, such as farms and rur\u00adal areas, the Mod\u00adel 35 is the bat\u00adtery-oper\u00adat\u00aded ver\u00adsion of the AC<\/span> Mod\u00adel 70. It uses the super\u00adhetero\u00addyne cir\u00adcuit. It may be dis\u00adtin\u00adguished from Mod\u00adel 70 in that it uses screws with rosettes to hold its heavy per\u00adma\u00adnent mag\u00adnet speak\u00ader in place.<\/p>\n

This is the one. It has been referred to as \"the epit\u00ado\u00adme of antique radios.\" The clas\u00adsic styling has made this set and its small\u00ader look-alikes, Mod\u00adels 21, 35, 46 and 70 Baby Grands, high\u00adly sought after for decades now.<\/p>\n

Note that ear\u00adly ver\u00adsions had plain\u00ader bot\u00adtom mold\u00ading, and a 3\/8\" thick front pan\u00adel. Lat\u00ader ver\u00adsions have fanci\u00ader bot\u00adtom mold\u00ading and a 1\/4\" thick front panel.<\/p>\n

Like the August 1930 Con\u00adcert Grand, this mod\u00adel also had a front pan\u00adel cov\u00adered in a dec\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtive cloth. And like the 211 radio-phono\u00adgraph of Jan\u00adu\u00adary 1931, this mod\u00adel also fea\u00adtured a Cape\u00adhart auto\u00admat\u00adic record changer.<\/p>\n
