Philco for 1937 (introduced June 1936)<\/h2>\n

<\/span>Overview<\/span><\/h3>\n

Philco's 1937 mod\u00adel line was com\u00adplete\u00adly new; all 1936 mod\u00adel Philcos were dis\u00adcon\u00adtin\u00adued. Many new Philco mod\u00adels made exten\u00adsive use of \"photofin\u00adish\" (decal-based) fin\u00adish\u00ades on their front pan\u00adels; which means if you strip the fin\u00adish off many of these 1937 mod\u00adels, you strip away its entire look; reveal\u00ading very plain white wood underneath.<\/p>\n

Most of the 1937 Philco line used a new devel\u00adop\u00adment called Unit Con\u00adstruc\u00adtion. Devel\u00adoped by Philco chief engi\u00adneer David Grimes (whose claim to fame pri\u00ador to Philco was his \"Inverse Duplex\" radio receivers of the 1920s), the new chas\u00adsis con\u00adstruc\u00adtion mount\u00aded the set's entire front end (tun\u00ading con\u00addenser, coils, band switch and asso\u00adci\u00adat\u00aded tubes) on its own chas\u00adsis which was mount\u00aded in the cen\u00adter of the main chas\u00adsis and sup\u00adport\u00aded by rub\u00adber grom\u00admets. These mod\u00adels are very dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to ser\u00advice. For\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly, Philco only used Unit Con\u00adstruc\u00adtion dur\u00ading the 1937 and 1938 mod\u00adel years, aban\u00addon\u00ading the idea afterwards.<\/p>\n

Some\u00adthing else made its debut in 1937 Philcos: octal-based tubes. These, how\u00adev\u00ader, were not the met\u00adal shell octals that had been devel\u00adoped by GE<\/span> and pushed hard by RCA<\/span> since 1935; 1937 Philco mod\u00adels used glass octal tubes with ST<\/span> (taper-top) envelopes.<\/p>\n

This pho\u00adto\u00adgraph shows an excel\u00adlent exam\u00adple of the \"photofin\u00adish\" used on many 1937 Philco mod\u00adels. If the photofin\u00adish is stripped off or allowed to dete\u00adri\u00ado\u00adrate to the point it is flak\u00ading off, plain white wood will be revealed under\u00adneath and the cab\u00adi\u00adnet will nev\u00ader look the same again unless care\u00adful\u00adly restored using the Stew\u00adart Schoo\u00adley technique.<\/p>\n

Philco's flag\u00adship Mod\u00adel grew to 15 tubes for 1937 and became a true High Fideli\u00adty receiv\u00ader with the use of a vari\u00adable band\u00adwidth con\u00adtrol. The new 116 was no longer avail\u00adable as a Baby Grand Mod\u00adel, but could be pur\u00adchased as the Stan\u00addard con\u00adsole (shown here), with a more con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal dial, or the De Luxe Mod\u00adel (see imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly below).<\/p>\n

It seems that most of these were built and sold as De Luxe Mod\u00adels, as the Stan\u00addard Mod\u00adel is hard to find.<\/p>\n

Both oper\u00adat\u00aded on 115 volts AC<\/span> and had five tun\u00ading bands (530-1600 kc, 1.58-4.75 mc, 4.7-7.4 mc, 7.35-11.6 mc &<\/span> 11.5-18.2 mc).<\/p>\n

The 37-2670 was much like Mod\u00adel 37-670, but added long\u00adwave cov\u00ader\u00adage (150 to 350 kc) while reduc\u00ading the short\u00adwave bands from four to three (1.6-4.8, 4.6-11.5 &<\/span> 11.5-22 mc). Of course it also received the AM<\/span> band. Like Philco's oth\u00ader 2600 Mod\u00adels, domes\u00adtic ver\u00adsions of the 37-2670 oper\u00adat\u00aded on 115 volts AC<\/span> while export ver\u00adsions could run on either 115 or 230 volt AC<\/span>.
