New, stream\u00adlined cab\u00adi\u00adnets housed very dif\u00adfer\u00adent chas\u00adsis; only a few table mod\u00adels bore any resem\u00adblance to 1938 models.<\/p>\n<p>This was the year Philco intro\u00adduced the industry's first wire\u00adless remote con\u00adtrol. Philco dubbed it Mys\u00adtery Con\u00adtrol and tried to keep the tech\u00adni\u00adcal aspects of its oper\u00ada\u00adtion a secret, even going so far as to claim in its adver\u00adtis\u00ading that it was \"not a radio beam,\" when in fact it was! The remote unit sent a pulse mod\u00adu\u00adlat\u00aded sig\u00adnal which was set at a fre\u00adquen\u00adcy between 350 and 400 kc to the main receiv\u00ader, which received the sig\u00adnal, processed the infor\u00adma\u00adtion and per\u00adformed the desired oper\u00ada\u00adtion by either switch\u00ading to one of eight pre\u00adset <span class=\"caps\">AM<\/span> sta\u00adtions, turn\u00ading the vol\u00adume up or down, or turn\u00ading the set off. It should be not\u00aded that you could not turn the set on with the remote.<\/p>\n<p>With all the hoopla sur\u00adround\u00ading its new Mys\u00adtery Con\u00adtrol, Philco qui\u00adet\u00adly dropped its High Fideli\u00adty research; no more High Fideli\u00adty receivers were built by the company.<\/p>\n<p>Philco's pre\u00advi\u00adous auto\u00admat\u00adic tun\u00ading meth\u00adods were also dropped in 1939; instead, push\u00adbut\u00adton tun\u00ading was adopt\u00aded. The push\u00adbut\u00adtons, for the most part, worked much bet\u00adter than Philco's pre\u00advi\u00adous auto\u00admat\u00adic tun\u00ading schemes had. The excep\u00adtions were Mod\u00adels 39-17, 39-18, 39-19 and 39-75, which employed a mechan\u00adi\u00adcal push\u00adbut\u00adton method; all oth\u00ader Philco mod\u00adels with push\u00adbut\u00adtons used the more pre\u00adcise elec\u00adtron\u00adic push\u00adbut\u00adton tuning.<\/p>\n<p>1939 was the year Philco intro\u00adduced two new series: Tran\u00adsi\u00adtone and Trop\u00adic. Tran\u00adsi\u00adtone was not a new name; it orig\u00adi\u00adnal\u00adly was the trade\u00admark of Auto\u00admo\u00adbile Radio Cor\u00adpo\u00adra\u00adtion, which Philco acquired in 1930. Between then and 1938, Philco Tran\u00adsi\u00adtone was an auto radio. Begin\u00adning with the 1939 sea\u00adson, how\u00adev\u00ader, Philco intro\u00adduced two low-priced table mod\u00adels which did not car\u00adry the Philco name at all - only the name Transitone.<\/p>\n<p>Philco Trop\u00adic was a new series of radios, made chiefly for export to trop\u00adi\u00adcal areas such as Cen\u00adtral Amer\u00adi\u00adca. These sets had coils and chas\u00adsis which were designed to with\u00adstand extremes in humidity.<\/p>\n<p>Accord\u00ading to var\u00adi\u00adous Philco doc\u00adu\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion, most mod\u00adels of 38-12, 38-14 and 38-15 sets were retained in the new 1939 line\u00adup; how\u00adev\u00ader, I have yet to see one of these labeled \"39-12,\" \"39-14,\" etc. A very like\u00adly pos\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty is that Philco may have had left\u00adover stock of these mod\u00adels and sim\u00adply sold them, com\u00adplete with \"38-12\" etc. stick\u00aders on the inside, until they were&nbsp;gone.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Model_Index\"><\/span>Model Index<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The fol\u00adlow\u00ading mod\u00adels remained in the Philco line\u00adup: 38-12CB (as 39-12CB), 38-12CBI (as 39-12CBI), 38-12T (as 39-12T), 38-14CB (as 39-14CB), 38-14CBI (as 39-14CBI), 38-14T (as 39-14T), 38-15CB (as 39-15CB), 38-15CBI (as 39-15CBI), 38-15T (as 39-15T).
