Philco for 1953<\/h2>\n

<\/span>Overview<\/span><\/h3>\n

Philco's 1953 line includ\u00aded more table mod\u00adel radios than the pre\u00advi\u00adous year, but only one con\u00adsole radio-phono\u00adgraph mod\u00adel. A new end table radio-phono\u00adgraph was intro\u00adduced, which could be used as a stand for a Philco table mod\u00adel tele\u00advi\u00adsion set.<\/p>\n

Dur\u00ading this mod\u00adel year, Philco chose to empha\u00adsize what they called the \"Spe\u00adcial Ser\u00advices\" band, the low\u00ader short\u00adwave fre\u00adquen\u00adcies between 1.7 and 3.4 mc. At the time, civ\u00adil defense, ama\u00adteur, fish\u00ading fleets, for\u00adest ser\u00advice, police, fire, air\u00adcraft and marine sig\u00adnals could be heard on this band. The vast major\u00adi\u00adty of Philco's 1953 mod\u00adels could receive this band.<\/p>\n

Philco also chose to make an Amer\u00adi\u00adcan ver\u00adsion of an old export Trop\u00adic mod\u00adel avail\u00adable for the first (and only) time - the 53-960. This giant radio could receive all of the short\u00adwave fre\u00adquen\u00adcies as well as AM<\/span>.<\/p>\n

A new com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adtion clock radio and lamp was also avail\u00adable this year (53-706).<\/p>\n

Sim\u00adi\u00adlar to some of the large Philco Trop\u00adic mod\u00adels of 1942-46, this very large (15-1\/2 inch\u00ades tall, 22-1\/4 inch\u00ades wide) table mod\u00adel has nine bands cov\u00ader\u00ading AM<\/span> and short\u00adwave from 540 kc to 21.9 mc.<\/p>\n

Such a large radio had not been pro\u00adduced by Philco for the Amer\u00adi\u00adcan mar\u00adket since tomb\u00adstone mod\u00adels ceased to be pro\u00adduced by the com\u00adpa\u00adny sev\u00ader\u00adal years pre\u00advi\u00adous. And it would not be repeat\u00aded for 1954; this mod\u00adel was tru\u00adly the last of its kind made by Philco.<\/p>\n

The set uses eight tubes and oper\u00adates on AC<\/span> current.<\/p>\n

The wood cab\u00adi\u00adnet has a mahogany fin\u00adish, with a mahogany leather pan\u00adel behind the con\u00adtrol knobs.<\/p>\n

Unlike the old\u00ader Trop\u00adic mod\u00adels, the 53-960 did not require an exter\u00adnal anten\u00adna. A built-in loop allowed recep\u00adtion of AM<\/span> sig\u00adnals, while a tele\u00adscop\u00ading whip anten\u00adna allowed recep\u00adtion of the short wave frequencies.<\/p>\n
