Looking through the cloth at Radio Daze in an attempt to answer someone's question in our sister Facebook group, I noticed this offering:

This is great news for folks who have the 1938 Philco consoles needing this cloth. Icon_thumbup You will notice this is a much different pattern from the 1934-37 chevron cloth.
Sam will be happy, That 38-3 he got from me could use it.
Not a terrible price either.

Yellow chevron?

Kenny as been selling the other one all this time.
How about grill cloth for this radio, a Philco 630?? The ones I see available do not match color wise.

Craig R.
Your 630 cloth is faded, the brown(bronze)/black chevron is the right replacement. You can probably see the original color on the cloth hidden by the cabinet.
I need your Dial Glass... Icon_e_biggrin

Go to Kenny's website and give him an order (we need to support his efforts, folks):

Scroll about halfway down the page to see Kenny's 1934-37 Philco chevron cloth.

As tab10672 said, your cloth is faded. Kenny's cloth is a great replacement. Icon_thumbup
Thanks, Ron. I saw this cloth on eBay (from Richmond Design) a while back. I inquired about its use on the 630 by messaging the seller and was told this was not the correct design for the 630 so I left it at that. Saw a YouTube video on "Chevron grill cloth comparison" and didn't realize that the fronts are different from the backs due to stitching and coloring. So one actually has a choice on which way to install. I'm sure that when I take mine apart, I will see that this is exactly what I need. Here is the video.

Is the 1938 cloth the same stuff that was used on the 1939 sets or is that different again?
Regards
Arran

Ron,
I have a late version of the 38-35f and although it is the cabinet of the January 38 gallery picture with the square dial, the cloth is the gold block style like the early round dial version pictured in the 38 (37) gallery.
So maybe it is an early version of the late style?
Either that, or Philco only used the 1938 chevron in the preproduction sample and then used the other pattern in production.

You know that Philco was famous (infamous?) for their running changes in production, not all of which were documented...
Yes, I know!
Makes it interesting and makes for rare collectors items.
