The shadow mask on my 650X is loose and moves around. It seems in good shape and the 2 tabs lock into the bracket fine. It would seem it is warped from being held in a curved position for 72 years or maybe it shrank? Any ideas on how to repair it so it does not move side to side?
Thanks
Here's an idea. All of mine move side to side about 1/10", maybe a little more. But, if it moves, try this. Cut thin fine strips of tape, just enough to place along the edges. This will help keep it tight. It doesn't have to be exactly as I've stated, but anything similar to achieve the same result. Keep in mind the shadow mask does bulge out just a little.

Second, the dial disk shouldn't rub against it. There is an inset screw in the dial disk mount(the dial scale mounts with a retaining clip). You can loosen it, and move the dial mount out just far enough to avoid the rubbing. Also, the two upper tabs that the dial scale sits behind, may need to be bent out slightly to keep things in alignment. That was the dial no longer rubs the shadow mask, causing it to move.

Last, make sure if you move the dial disk out, to re-align the dial scale so your tracking remains proper.

Does this help?
I have way more then 1/10 of an inch side to side play. I have about 15 KHz slop. IMO any slop would be too much as it would be impossible to accurately align the dial yet the radio to it. My 620 uses a similar mask and it has little or no play. Go figure. I guess I will try to build some shims to fix the problem.
Bill, make sure the dial scale isn't "rubbing" on the shadow mask. There should be a small gap between the two. It shouldn't be moving unless you force it. I understand it can move when shifting the radio from place to place. I have very slight movement in any of my shadow mask, and I have to make it happen. Sounds like this one seriously warped.
