The PHILCO Phorum

I recently bought an old Philco Transitone 5 tube radio with a wood case, Am only. The stamp on the back of the chassis reads 42-pt3, code 121. I think this is a 1942 model but I can't find the wiring schematic in the data. Also I have a question as to what kind of capacitors are used in the model? Paper , electrolytic or what? This is my first restoration project and I would appreciate your help. Thanks, walt

Hi Walt,
Just as an aside the Gallery pic /description sez the cabinet is finished wit a photofinish (read decal here). If you try to strip or sand this finish it will leave you with a white looking cabinet and no grain pattern.

The photofinish described in the gallery link is a finish you can not strip, it will disappear and you will be left with a very plain wood.

Thanks for all your help so far,
I am restoring a 1942 Philco Transitone radio and am in the recapping phase of the operation. I've got most of the capacitors figured out but there is one large ,hybrid looking, electrolytic capacitor, 20 mfd ( philco p/n 39-2382 ) that has two wires on one end (one red, one yellow) and a black wire one the other end that has me stumped. It would help to know what model number you are working on but I suspect you have a cap that has 2 caps in it with a common negative lead (black). Probably not able to find an exact replacement but you may be able to gut the existing one and restuff it with new modern electrolytics.

Walt, that cap would be #26 with two 20 uF electrolytics in it.  Here's a thread where I restuffed a similar one.  The multi ecap in my thread had 3 caps in it and one common negative lead but its the same idea.  It took a lot if digging and drilling to get the guts out and it is easy to mess up the outer cardboard can.  I've also made a simulated can when I could not get the guts out.

you are talking about E cap  30-2382    not 39-2382
it is a double 20mfd cap  #26 and 26a
