The PHILCO Phorum

I just opened up a recent purchase of a Philco and I'm not sure exactly what I have. The label on the inside says it's a model 66. However, there is a hole in the chassis where the 80 rectifier is indicated on the label and looks like nothing was ever mounted there. On top of the power transformer is an integrated tube socket, but definitely not for an 80 tube as it is an 8 pin socket (and empty). Another thing I don't see in looking at it is a dial light, or mounting brackets whatsoever. Does anyone have a picture of a chassis that might be like mine they could post to see what's supposed to be there? Thanks!

It sure looks like a model 66. Someone rewired the 80 rectifier tube for the more modern 5Y3 which is electrically the same. It's not an unusual modification; I've done it many times in the past.

Thanks for the info - I'm guessing then the transformer was replaced as well since the socket looks to be incorporated on the top of it?

In addition to what Pete has already stated, I would add that it appears someone used a 1937/38 Philco transformer with integrated octal rectifier tube socket on top to replace the original vertical mounting power transformer, and removed the original 80 rectifier socket.

If I don't forget, I'll try to photograph and post some photos of my Model 66 chassis sometime over the weekend, for comparison.

Notice how, from the top views, the Model 66 chassis looks identical to a Model 60 chassis. The only thing that gives it away is the different dial scale which covers 4.2 to 12 mc shortwave in addition to AM. Underneath, however, the parts layout differs from a 60.

Thanks to both for the pictures. The dial lamp assembly looks pretty basic and should be able to come up with something when the time comes. I wasn't sure if it was one of the more involved type with the reflective hood and all.
