The set looked bad to me anyway, thought I was going to have to replace the top veneer, but was able to sand it down.

question about the 41-295x is there a way to get the speaker slats off the front of the cabinet. i figured it would be easier to sand down with them off.

Didn't see any way to remove the bars in front of the speaker, so have been sanding around them.
I got most of the sanding done. Just have to get around those post. When I get it done, I will post some more pictures. Then the next faze.

Use acetone or paint and varnish remover on the bars, preferably on the whole cabinet, it's only lacquer, with sandpaper you are taking material off that you don't need to and may damage some moldings in the process.

Thanks Arran, i got most of it off with the remover, but still have to do a little sanding to get the rest off. All and all its looking pretty good. I have a few dings to fill, then on to the grain filler. Not sure what to use for that. Couldn't find anything at Lowes. Will keep reading to see what others are using.

Sorry about assuming that you didn't use stripper, or acetone, you would be surprised how many people try stripping a piece of furniture the hard way, I have a Philco 620 cabinet where someone went at it with a sanding disk and ruined the moldings, as well as leaving swirl marks elsewhere. I would try applying some with a small brush and use a dental pick or small jewelers screwdriver to get it out of the crevices, somewhere along the way I ended up finding a spacial paint stripping tool at a yard sale and have been using that for finish removal, it has a number of profiles on it to remove paint or other finish from moldings and the like. In terms of what to use for grain filler you could try asking around at paint stores, otherwise you will have to improvise something such as plaster, or go the mail order route.

I don't believe so but not 100% positive - I would have to see details of the product first to say one way or the other.

Most likely you will have to order grain filler online. You can find walnut grain filler (which is what you want to use) here:

Looking forward to watching your progress.  I have one of those that someone tried to refinish.  It'll have to be stripped again and done properly.  They stripped out the original stain then finished it in that very light color leaving a cigarette burn and a few other problems.

I have the grain filler on order, have the nicks all fielded in. Will start the next step when the Mohawk grain filler gets here next week. The radio is all but done. Looking forward to seeing how it comes out.

I had the grain filler on, then started the final Lacquer. everything looked pretty good, except the top, for some reason it bubbled up in a few places. not sure what caused that. I will have to re-strip the top, and start again.

Almost finished with the 40-180 cabinet, so will get back to the 41-295. Have to redo the top of the cabinet, and still have to do the cap replacement. still not sure if I'm going to try re-stuffing the old caps. I finally received the flocking powder, but it wasn't enough to do the job right. The color didn't match so I had to scrape off the excising flock. Found some swede drawer paper, that was perfect thickness. it looks great. So the only thing left to do is the caps in the chassis.
