I recently picked one of these little guys up for about the price of the 9V battery that it takes. I am almost positive I had one of these as a kid. Anyway, I cleaned it up and it needed no work to get playing.
Why am I posting this comment, because in the evenings it is an excellent DX'er. Baltimore, all the NYC stations, 990 Rochester NY, Canadian Maritimes, so it is a nice set, small package. Why is it that even these old tiny sets beat the pants off a modern table radio? I know, I know, people expected more and companies gave more thought to production.
But if you see one of these for 5$ at a swap, garage sale, etc......buy one. Have fun.

The old Patrolman was a good radio. I had one and used to listen to Jean Shepherd on WOR out of New York when I was a kid in Providence. Actually, though, there are some great portable radios being made today. Recently I bought a Tecsun PL-600 for less than $60 brand new with free shipping, It is a great little radio that runs rings around that old Patrolman of my youth, with dual conversion, a tunable BFO for SSB and CW, PLL digital tuning that can be either done by a knob, or directly entered, and continuous coverage from 100KC to 29.999MC. It also receives FM stereo which you can hear with headphones or using an external amplifier since it only has one speaker. Here are the specs:

Oh that is fun Paul. Realistic products were available in the UK.... It takes me back to the Tandy shop & catalog that I spent hours leafing through, working out what to save up for next. The multi circuit kits were a favourite, all sorts of radios, components, hifi etc. my first speakers were the Realistic 50W acoustic suspension design. I saved forever for those!

Last summer I picked up a Patrolman 50 from an antique shop locally. I'm usually critical of people who describe things as "like new", but .... this one was as close as it gets. I stuffed in batteries and turned it on and everything worked perfectly, so it's it the camper waiting for summer again. And yes, it is a great sounding radio with good sensitivity. I have no idea what company made it.

I had one as a kid too! I think is was a Patrolman SW60. I kept it on the floor on the wall side of the bed and used a pillow speaker so my Mom wouldn’t hear it. I could easily reach down and tune it finding my favorite stations.
Funny what you remember. What a cool thing it was to listen to all those stations many far away. My dad brought me home a little black transistor job from a surplus store around here called Bldg 19. 2 bucks, and boy did I have fun with it. Lasted a long time for a cheapie. May be listening to a portable tonite as our lights have been fading. 60-70 Mph winds up here. Tough nite to be a trouble man with Eversource.

Yea the winds were bad. I had a 44 Mph gust at my house and it was really bad in the hills. We have to get a tower crew up to Western Mass to realign a microwave dish or dishes. We lost a path that was carrying a few other radio sites.
I feel bad or those still in the dark. Going to be cold tonight.
Not far from me 72 mph gust, around the corner form me a Hot Line came down and toched a Xfinity Truck, looked like it was firebombed, a rough nite and a little snow coming.
