Hello Everyone,

I'm working on a PHILCO 610 Tombstone set and I was adjusting the Standard Broadcast Antenna and Oscillator "Compensating Condensers" and found that they have no effect on reception. I ran a 1.6 MHz signal into the set with the radio dial set at that frequency and got no signal out. Adjusting "Condensers" had no effect. The set is playing quite well, tracking is ok. I was a bit surprised when I saw this. Any thoughts regarding this?? Curious...
Much thanks in advance.

Steve
Hi and welcome,
Are you adjusting the proper trimmers for the broadcast band?
W/o using the generator does #11 move the stations @ the high end of the dial?
Does #10 (screw) move stations @ the low end of the dial?
Thank You Radioroslyn,

I was adjusting per the schematic, trimmers #5 and 11. I didn't try the others. At least per the diagram, knew I was adjusting the correct trimmers. #11 did not move the stations. #5 antenna trimmer had no effect either. Set is tracking ok. Stations are very close to correct on radio dial. I'm used to seeing these trimmers on the tuning capacitor itself.

Double check the trimmer # with the chassis layout pic vs the schematic sometimes they differ. The ant trimmer may not have much of an effect if you are using a generator. I find using a short ant maybe a foot or two of wire and tuning the set up to the high end of the bcb then peak it up.
If the trimmer are on the tuning cap when you adjust those it will effect all of the different bands. If it a single band set is fine.

Trimmer screws on tuning cap absent. I compared schematic to picture layout of chassis top view. Looks correct. #5 adjustment is in antenna circuit and #11 is in Osc coil circuit...
The old skool method is use your screwdriver to touch the ungrounded side of the trimmers till you find the one that shift the osc frequency. The one @ the front corner of the chassis is to set the low end of the bcb.
I'll be replacing the Dial on this set. When I do that, I'll do what you suggest and we'll see what happens. I'll let you know what occurs...
