The PHILCO Phorum

The Philco 47-1230 console-style radio has Phono, AM, SW, and FM capabilities. The one I am trying to make work for a friend has been worked on before. The original, semi-rotatable, loop antenna is still in place, but the two fixed antennas are not. The Philco Service Manual shows the antennas in the schematic, but they are not described in any detail in the text. I have tried several wire placements, but I have not found a satisfactory one for either the broadcast or for the shortwave bands. I have been able to hear four or five faint signals in the broadcast band, but none in the shortwave band. Several stations are heard in the FM band.

If you have one of these sets could you look at the antennas and describe them to me? (Or is there a printed description available?)

Also, Is there any information about the phonograph player care and maintenance, cartridge type, and needle style?

Hi Jim

The semi-rotatable antenna is for AM and SW; the FM antenna was two wires would part of the way down the edges of the back of the cabinet. The wires were not connected to each other.

The AM/SW loop connects to terminals 1 and 2 of the three-screw terminal board on top left of the chassis (when looking at the back).

The FM dipole plugs into a small four-pin jack next to this terminal board.

You need the factory service info to determine the pinout of this jack, so you know which terminals are actually used for the FM dipole (hint: only two of the four terminals are used).
